Product Description In early Seventies New York, drug addict Jim (Leonardo DiCaprio) keeps a diary detailing the course of his dissolute life. His grip on reality loosens as his consumption of illicit substances increases, until a spell at Riker's Island juvenile reformatory gives him a chance to regain control of his life. .co.uk Review The pre-Titanic Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jim Carroll, the poet and musician who spent much of his adolescence addicted to heroin and shooting hoops with fellow Catholic high-school kids. As a biography, the film doesn't amount to more than the sum of its gritty scenes of smack use, violence, perversions (poor Bruno Kirby plays a lecherous coach who comes on to young Jim), and the usual scream-and-puke dramas that go along with a cold-turkey session. Director Scott Kalvert doesn't seem to realise that most people don't know who Carroll is and therefore can't possibly understand why they should care about his gutterball youth. DiCaprio, having nowhere to go with his performance but maintain Carroll's tailspin, is boring and redundant. Some kind of allusion to the literary and rock & roll life that follows the mess we're watching might have been helpful. The DVD release offers the choice of a full or widescreen (letterbox) picture, plus interviews. --Tom Keogh, .com

Scratched disc. Ruined film.
I know I got this as pre-owned, but there were alot of scratches on the disc, resulting of me having to skip several chapters of the film because of it 'skipping/crashing'. Very annoying. Haven't seen it in years and was looking forward to seeing it again. Damn good film, too. Low stars for ruined viewing experience. Otherwise I'd have probably given it 4 stars. Shame.

Laugh a minute (!) doomathon with at least some redemption at the end
Entirely watchable, but grim viewing indeed. Earns its 18 certificate and then some. Oodles of the F word. Hardcore drug use and abuse. Some strong, bloody violence, too. Leo does an utterly convincing job of portraying a desperate man doing desperate things to feed his habit. Mark Wahlberg is equally excellent as his best friend / cause of all his problems. Itβs definitely not an easy watch and can be extremely harrowing in places. My favourite ghostbuster appears as a possible ray of hope. The film runs for 102, or an hour and forty two, minutes. Thereβs zero extras. And no subtitles. If youβre looking for a cheery experience- this is not it. But Juliette Lewis is always nice to see/watch.
