Control on Leash: Revolutionary Leash Walking Techniques for Dog Owners

Of the fifteen or so training books I've purchased this year, this book is far and above the best. Although author Michelle Huntting says the same thing as other top trainers, her effective communication and step-by-step style lead almost everyone (including stubborn me) to success at loose lease walking. It doesn't hurt that her development of Miss Belle's Etiquette School for Dogs has honed her skills in good old-fashioned mutual respect and mutual understanding between dog and human. She helps us with our frustration at lack of accomplishment of this activity when she discloses that polite leash walking is the hardest behavior to establish. She gently leads the reader along the path to success. Walking the dog on leash doesn't even happen for the first 100 pages. By then, the reader and his/her dog "can dance" well together and are certain of success. As she states on page 3 of her book, "I set out on a mission to train my dogs to walk politely on the leash without 'power steering' or by use of force. I decided to use what I know about science, motivation and communication." For us the readers, Michelle's learning and her experience teaching combined with her unique communication skills make this book an invaluable resource.

I so enjoyed Come, Boy by Michelle Huntting that I decided to invest in this longer work. I really enjoy her smooth, relaxed writing style, and her training methods are logical and sensible. I also appreciate the gentle touch training techniques that she recommends in both books. They are easy to follow, humane, and fun. I have also given her book Gotta Go on potty training several times to friends with new puppies and have gotten positive feedback on their successes using the suggested training methods in that book as well. I highly recommend all three books by this author and trainer!

As a woman I like pretty frocks and the colour pink, but on the cover of a dog training book, it initially put me off. However, the subliminal message that walking the dog should be a summer breeze obviously sunk in, because I bought it and, although I haven't read it all the way through yet, I like what I've seen so far enough to want to say so now.For some reason this book seems to be bringing all the more recent thoughts about dog training to life for me and little light bulbs are illuminating, cross references are being made to other modern teachings on the subject, the "old ways" are finally slipping away and my enthusiasm for bringing my dog and me into a successful partnership as he grows feels like it will be fun, as well as achievable.There are of course things which I can't do so easily, such as finding willing friends with dogs to come to the dog park and train with us, but I can get round that I think by using strangers and their dogs, who won't have a clue they are part of my dogs training routine. I'm not too sure I want to take him to one side of my local park and jump up and down, sing, or dance about while asking him to stay, however, my back garden is fairly big and my neighbours already know I'm eccentric.The piece concerning the dogs comfort zone has already proved useful as, very soon after reading it, my dog and I met a little dog that approached "up on his toes", heeding the advice I walked us round him in a large arc and the little dog visibly relaxed. I liked that.I do feel this is "a considered purchase" because, as dog training books go, it seems to me to be quite expensive, especially as it is in need of a second edit. You will find the odd bit of clumsy writing, punctuation and page layout and, if after forking out £15, you know this will drive you up the wall then wait a bit, either for the price to come down or for the second edit, but I personally think it's well worth a punt as it stands.
