I have enjoyed using these flash cards since I started learning Chinese. They help a lot and they are easy to carry with me when I'm traveling. I bought all 4 volumes and they are well worth the money.

This earlier version of Chinese flashcards has some advantages over the newer version ("Chinese Flash Cards Volume 1 and 2"). These flashcards are printed in black ink on heavy card stock and are easier to read than the blue ink on the newer version's slicker card stock. The newer version's slicker card stock would likely stay cleaner longer than the material used on this older version. The front side of the card is better organized in the newer version since the simplified character is large and prominent with the traditional form off to the side. The equal prominence of both forms of the character on the "Chinese in a Flash Kit Volume 4" is distracting. The back of the card is visually better organized in this older version even though both contain the same material. Overall, this version of Chinese flashcards is still a good value. The better readability outweighs the slightly less sturdiness of the card stock.

These cards most likely will be your fourth purchase in your study of written Chinese if you have previously purchased the 1st, 2nd and 3rd iterations of Tuttle cards. The character progression is thoughtful and gradual as the first set as you begin common words and progress to more difficult ones. These cards continue to same trend of providing example sentences and couplet words. You are probably already hooked by now on the Tuttle series so this is the natural progression. The cards are made of the same high-quality card-stock that the first set was made of that doesn't wear easily; I have carried the cards around in my pocket for months with a rubber-band around them without noticeable damage to the cards. The cards do no come with a carrying case which would be beneficial to keep them organized. I found a small plastic case which fit the cards almost perfectly from another flashcard set that I had purchased; I cannot remember the name of the product as the plastic case is the only thing that has survived. I recommend a thorough study of spoken Chinese before moving on to written as it will give you a better understanding of how the words that you are learning on the cards are used in context. The example sentences are great but are not all-inclusive of the situations in which certain words can be used. A great product overall and I would highly recommend to any student of the Chinese language. The pinyin for pronunciation on these cards is for Mandarin Chinese but the meaning of many of the characters also reflects the Cantonese meaning as well (though the pinyin for that dialect is not included on this particular set of cards). Happy Studying!
