Q: What is the thickness ? Would it be ok to use for saddle stitching small items , purses ,wallets etc.

It’s substantial; I use it to repair gold embroidery on my Naval Academy class crest shirts. It should work; for really tough jobs you can double up the thread.

Q: How does this hold up with machine washing? What are the instructions / requirements for that?

I used it on a quilt I made for a friend for Christmas. I only washed it once before I gave it to him. It came out of the wash just fine. The thread did not come with any stitching or washing instructions. I used a regular sewing needle, not a top stitch or embroidery needle and it sewed just fine. I hope this helos!

I would only hand wash it and I try to iron on the back side only
