Do I have to wash this colour root spray off of my hair before I dye my hair again?

Personally I would wash it out because then the Hair Dye will take better.

Does this work on very dark roots?

I have grey roots it did cover just very sticky

I have relatively short blonde-ish hair. Would the dark brown hair spray work to colour my hair brown for fancy dress and then wash out?

This just sprays over your hair- like paint! So yes, I think it would be fine to colour your hair. I find it doesn’t last long on my hair so I expect it would wash out ok. You might just need to wash your hair twice to get it nice and golden again.

Does it last all day?

Yes it does last all day and it doesn't brush out at all. You can apply more the next day if you wish and it makes the hair seem thicker, but also leaves the scalp feeling slightly itchy.
