A good romp
Yes OK it's pretty cheesy and I had heard some pretty uncomplimentary reviews so I wasn't expecting much, but I gave it a chance and actually it was pretty enjoyable. There's an excellent thrash metal soundtrack which is a nice bonus. At it's core it's another zombie movie, but done on Mars and the "zombies" have a mission and a purpose. There's some good violence and fight scenes and Natasha Henstridge is an impressive woman for sure - she steals the show I think.Give it a go - you never know.

One of my most favourite movies
I adore is so much. Great plot, Great cast: Pam Grier, Natasha Henridge, Jason Statham and Ice-T among others. Love this movie, the evil mad zombies are led by a more evil, madder zombie who gives them all a speech that is just growls. That actor deserved every penny. Great movie. I strongly recommened it to those who like their sci fi horror OTT and slightly funny :)

Between a fright and a camp place
I don't know what to make of this film. On the one hand it's stylishly directed, with neat minimalist sets; on the other it's so campily written and acted that I thought it might be satire. Maybe the way to approach it is as knowing trash. Pam Grier plays a butch lesbian, while Ice Cube's an inner city hood transplanted to Mars; both characters are walking cliches who'd have been at home in exploitation films. What's strange is that there's no sex and the gore is quick cut. John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars feels poised between intensity and sleaze. If it had picked an approach it may have worked, but as it is it's a jarring mess; deftly paced, but lacking tone. The film, which takes place entirely on Mars, starts with policewoman Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) being found handcuffed in a train, alone. The main story's then told through flashbacks as she recalls to a council what happened. Her team, led by Helena Bradock (Grier) and including Bashira Kincaid (Clea DuVall) and Nathan Jericho (Jason Statham), was assigned to escort prisoner "Desolation" Williams (Cube) from a remote outpost. When they arrive, however, the outpost's empty and strange creatures stalk them. The storytelling's inept. Expository flashbacks to events we've already witnessed are dotted throughout the first half, as if Carpenter's writing a detective story. Too many characters pop up, so ones who seem like they should be developed are left flat. The supernatural threat's treated arbitrarily. A doctor played by Joanna Cassidy gives a theory as to what it is, and more suspense would have emerged if the film had said no more, but later she gets a flashback of her own which just confuses things. What Ghosts of Mars does best is action, set design and special effects. The outpost is shown via squat, semi-underground buildings against a starless sky. It's not a thousand miles away in effect from The Thing's Antarctic base. That's partly what makes the film suspenseful despite its campiness. The action has a video game feel to it and is staged well. A battle between humans and creatures is great fun to watch. The creatures themselves look good, and Henstridge has a haunting dream sequence. Ghosts of Mars is like the trashiest pulp comic; insubstantial rubbish, but enjoyable.

Amazing
One of my all time favourites, it may not be the best film in the world, but the story is great, there’s comedy, action, gore and it’s John carpenter, enough said really

Carpenter at his best.
I absolutely LOVE this film. Once again, John Carpenter swings, hits and knocks it out of the park.At first, you don't know what to expect from this movie, then BAM!!! Classic Carpenter. Definitely one of his best. :)

This information could be of some help
For those of you who have purchased or are considering purchasing this disc and are concerned about availability of English language audio tracks and subtitles I suggest you read the following information as it clears things up.This is a French release blu-ray disc, yes. And it has a French jacket / cover, the disc menus are also in French, and it has French subtitles. However, there are both French AND English DTS 5.1 Master Audio tracks on the disc, BUT they have to be enabled via the Pop Up Menu on your Blu-Ray player; the Audio button on your remote control won't switch the audio tracks. The French subtitles CAN be turned off for the main film but again, you have to do this via the blu-ray Pop Up Menu as the remote control's subtitle button doesn't switch them off either. The menu's are all pretty clear, but just in any case, some instructions:First, activate the Pop Up Menu on your bluray player using your remote control. Then when the menu is displayed onscreen choose 'VERIONS' from the three available menu options:► VERSIONS ◄ | CHAPITRES | BONUSThen choose► AUDIOand then choose► VO DTS 5.1 ← This one is EnglishVF DTS 5.1COMMENTAIRE AUDIO DE JOHN CARPENTERThen to turn off French subitles choose► SOUS TITRESand then choose► SANS ← This one turns off subtitlesAVECThe five onscreen informational outlines that appear briefly at the beginning of the film are in French and cannot be removed. This is how they are displayed on this French release blu-ray disc:Informational outline 1:MARS, 2176Informational outline 2:TERRAFORMATION: 84%Informational outline 3:POPULATION: 640 000 COLONSInformational outline 4:SOCIÉTÉ MATRIARCALEInformational outline 5:LOI TERRIENNE APPLIQÉE PAR LA FORCE DE POLICE DE MARSThe Informational outlines, apart from being in French, are slightly different to the English DVD. The corresponding English language DVD onscreen informational outlines display as:Informational outline 1:MARS 2176 A.D.Informational outline 2:TERRAFORMING 84% COMPLETEEARTH-LIKE ATMOSPHEREInformational outline 3:POPULATION: 640,000 COLONISTSInformational outline 4:SOCIETY: MATRIARCHALInformational outline 5:EARTH LAW ENFORCED BY MARS POLICE FORCEAfter these Informational outlines have displayed the film will continue in English language without subitles. So perfectly okay. The bonus material / extras on the blu-ray disc are Standard Definition (straight from the DVD by the looks of it) with original English language audio ...but with French subtitles. The bonus material subtitles cannot be turned off however. The picture quality on this blu-ray disc is noticably better than the DVD release but it's not an absolutely vast difference. The DVD picture quality was pretty good anyway, but you can nonetheless easily tell that this is an HD transfer. I'd give PQ a 6.5/10 personally. It's a difficult film to judge anyway, being as it is shot exclusively at night. The DTS Master Audio sound track on my home cinema system sounds terrific and is a step up from the DD 5.1 track on the DVD. Effects are spread appropriately accross front and rear speakers with deep rumbling bass when called for, and the Anthrax film score sounds better than ever.Aside of all the above, this is another one of my favourite popcorn movies. But then I'll buy anything with Mars in the title! Okay, acting and story are in the B movie zone but I like that and the lineup is diverse and unexpected and entertaining. That is, you get Pam Grier (Escape from L.A., Jackie Brown etc.), Jason Statham (Transporter, Crank etc.), Natasha Henstridge (Species, The Whole Nine Yards etc.) and rapper Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson, Sr) (Anaconda, Three Kings etc.) in the lead roles. Quite a mix there. It's an enjoyable horror sci-fi movie on Mars...by John Carpenter. Just don't over analyse it.
