The Malta Story [DVD]

One of the best WW2 films produced within 10 years of the war itself.
Not surprisingly, it does not have the technical refinement of modern warfare films, but the storyline is good and there is a realism that lacks in many modern films. I have a serious interest in WW1 and WW2 so may well be biased, but anyone with a similar interest would not be disappointed with this film

Film that mixes drama with documentary
Stilted film by modern standards but excellent reportage footage of how Malta suffered in WW2 and why the island deserved its George Cross. Skylines of Malta so very different to Malta of the 2018, but spotting common landmarks round Vallarta is fascinating.

A great war film
A great war film, very atmospheric having been filmed in black-and-white on location in Malta while much of the devastation caused by relentless Italian and German bombing in World War II was still there to be seen. If you happen to be visiting Malta it is a good film to watch before you visit the war museums there and you will find it on sale in Valletta and elsewhere. Highly recommended.

If you like British war movies of this era then you should buy this.
An excellent period movie that has been translated from film to DVD well; the picture and sound qualities are very good. If you like British war movies of this era then you should buy this.

Bad title, good film, Guinness is unconvincing. Scenery and settings interesting and good side plot.
A must for those that know Malta. Streets still filled with rubble. Spot the places you know. Based on fact. Alec Guinness not really an action hero, and doesn’t really get into the role. Jack Hawkins is just class!

Straightforward and Enjoyable
Of course now very dated by modern standards, it was of particular interest to me as I am currently writing a book which covers events in Malta in 1942. Although not a great film, it provided an hour or so's pleasant enough entertainment The same five spitfires appear time after time photographed from different angles. A simple plot, but I am glad to have seen it and I have been to many of the locations featured in the film sequencies

this movie best communicates the importance Malta played in the war for ...
If one reads Sir Martin Gilbert's "Winston Churchill: Road to Victory, 1941-1945", this movie best communicates the importance Malta played in the war for North Africa. Good performances to a fine script.

Excellent Film - Visualises the horrors and courage described in the books
Having read Fortress Malta, The Air Battle of Malta and Malta - The Thorn in Rommels Side I decided to buy this DVD as it seemed to encapsulate the courage and fortitude of the armed services and civilian population of Malta during WW2. I was not disappointedeven though the film was monochrome rather than colour! With a star cast including Alec Guiness, Jack Hawkins, Anthony Steel and Flora Robson, supported with real wartime footage the full story and horrors they endured was brought to life.I visit Malta twice a year to research the history and locations described in the books, the film showed some familiar sights, especially the airfields, Manuel Island sub base and the Lascaris war rooms (see photo) that are set deep into the stone hills of Valletta.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
