The Torch: 1 (Lilly and Myles)

Lovely story and illustrations
Lovely story and illustrations; bought this for my daughter, who is like Lilly in some ways, for our holiday, which has included exploring a cave on a beach with her torch. Great for kids who see the world differently to have a story with someone who feels things as they do - and great to help other kids to understand how they experience the world too. Looking forward to more in the series!

Lilly and Miles The Torch Thank you to the Author, graffeg books and Lovebooktours for my copy of this book. I donate all childrenโs books to my grandsons school for all children to enjoy.BlurbAccompanied by Myles, her assistance dog, Lilly sets off from Grannyโs house to explore. First she walks through the garden, then she visits the seashore. But when she comes to the big cave at the end of the beach her acute hearing means she is scared of the loud noise when she drops her torch. And whatโs that creature she can hear coming towards her?...๐๐๐๐ฉ ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ช๐๐๐ฉ ..This book is about Lilly a little girl with autism. A person with autism may experience difficulties interpreting and organising input from what they see, taste, touch, hear and smell. Sensory perceptions can become frightening or even painful and can lead to high anxiety and meltdowns so this is a very good book for children in schools to learn and understand the condition.Especially when a child cannot speak and convey what they want.Lilly in the book has Myles a working assistance dog who helps her with her anxiety. Lilly loves to visit her nanna who lives by the beach, she loves to explore. With Nan behind her and Myles at her side Lilly goes exploring. Until she comes to the cave where all of those senses come into play to frighten and unsettle Lilly. The dark, the sounds and the smells until the only way Lilly knows is to cover her ears and rock to calm herself.A beautifully illustrated book great for schools and children to learn about the condition and how it affects a person and what maybe you can do to calm the child affected. It can also be quite scary for a child that does not understand autism to witness a meltdown or some behaviour exhibited by a child with the condition an all round great teaching tool for schools all in a lovely heartwarming story with a cute dog ๐ถโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

This story brings it to childrenโs & adults attention how children live with autism
I would have given this childrenโs book more than five stars if I could have!Lilly and Myles The Torch is a lovely childrenโs book, that teaches children all about autism, in how they see the world, how they feel, and about sounds. Also this marvellous book that helps children understand why dogs play an important role in helping children with autism. For schools, this is very much a helpful educational resource fictional story about a girl suffering from autism, that needs to be read in all classrooms, to help children understand the meaning of autism. The character Lilly suffers from autism which is a spectrum condition that effects people in different ways. Lilly has trouble understanding the world around her and finds it difficult to communicate, but she is starting to say some words.Lilly loves repeating new words and phrases. It is called echolalia. It helps Lilly remember words and sometimes calms her down when she gets excited. Echolalia is a salient speech disturbance characteristically described in children with autism.Lilly often waves and flaps her hands, this helps her process her feelings when she is excited or worried.Lillyโs ears are very sensitive and loud sounds can be overwhelming and painful.Myles is Lillyโs assistance dog. He has been trained to provide Lilly with safety, companionship and sometimes independence in her life.Myles helps Lilly if he thinks she might be in danger. If Lily gets upset or scared, he will comfort her by lying across Lillyโs lap. Myles weight acts like a big comfy blanket and this makes Lilly feel calm.Myles wears a colourful vest. This is to tell people that he is a working dog and that he is looking after Lilly. Other people should never stroke or talk to Myles, as this could distract him from his work and put Lilly in danger.Thereโs everything inside this book that brings it to children and adults attention how children live with autism.

It's fun, educational and has a fantastic little story. I love how it highlights how people with autism can experience sights and sounds differently. My childlike mind wanted to instantly go and pick up a torch and explore my home looking at the world through the eyes of a child. Looking at shadows and how the light dance on different surfaces. A great book to lead in to exploring things.๐ ๐Absolutely, I thought it was great! Read more
