In April 1980 armed gunmen stormed the Iranian Embassy in Princes Gate, London and took all inside hostage. Over the next six days a tense standoff took place, all the while a group of highly trained soldiers from the SAS prepared for a raid the world had never seen the likes of and which would change the world forever.

A true story
The SAS reinforces their reputation. A really good movie of coordination, convictions and bravery. Job well done Margret Thatcher and the SAS!A must watch movie.

The "SAS" does not mess around.
6 Days is a New Zealand made film about the terrorist take over of the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980. The take over of the Iranian Embassy by Arab speaking Iranians who were being oppressed by their own Government, occurred shortly after the failed hostage rescue attempt of Americans being held in Iran, by US Special Forces. Are you still with me? This event actually happened where the British Government attempted to negotiate with the terrorists over 6 days to release the hostages most of whom were Iranians but also included a British Policeman. After 6 days the SAS were sent in to do what they do and it was all played out on live TV. So, the movie mostly follows Jamie Bell as the leader of the SAS soldiers, and Mark Strong as the Police Negotiator speaking daily to the leader of the terrorists. This movie mirrors in many ways a very good action film also available on Prime called "The Final Option". In that film (made in 82' soon after the real hostage crises in London) terrorists take over the American Embassy and want nuclear weapons out of Britain and the SAS goes in to free the hostages. The actual "assault" in both films is nearly identical and both are well done.6 Days starts slowly but builds to a satisfying finish. The film looks "dark", like it was poorly lit, on purpose, to give the impression it was made in the 80's when events took place I think. I'm a big fan of Mark Strong but thought his character was rather "weak" here, too emotionally attached to the terrorists, I thought as a Police Inspector he'd be "tougher", "angrier" at the bad guys for what they were doing. Jamie Bell does a credible job of leading the SAS soldiers in the assault. Unlike the "Hollywood" version (Final Option), here the SAS attack is anything but "crisp", or "calculated". Its more like clumsy, chaotic, unexpected things go wrong, the hostages are rescued but its due to a lot of "luck" in some ways. What I did LIKE about this film was some of the behind the scenes decision making by the Thatcher Government in handling the crises. it was for example intentional that the rescue was filmed on live TV with no attempt to use smoke to hide the action because Thatcher wanted the World to see how Britain was going to deal with terrorist attacks from now on. IE; "were going to send in the SAS and they are going to kill you if you mess with us" The last thing is the film shows what the soldiers go thru in preparation for the attack; start, stop, plan, practice over & over, get ready to go, stand down, make a plan, abandon it, make a new plan--Ugh! No wonder when the attack happens, they go in hard, and mean, and treat terrorists and hostages nearly identical. This film is by no means "great"--but its pretty darn good--I'm glad I purchased it--I'll watch it agai.itt of

Good movie
I was surprised by how much I liked the movie. Historically based movies can be iffy especially the treatment of more recent world and national events. I seem drawn to movies that star Mark Strong (I wonder why) and his understated performance in this film is exactly what I expect from him. The only MAJOR draw-back is the always less-than-stellar performance by Abby Cornish. How she has managed to land so many leading parts with so little talent is beyond me. Her labored accent is an embarrassment. It's curious that with so many fine authentic British actressess they had to cast an Australian who seemed to smirk at every torturous line in the film. While she's a pretty girl, pretty does not mean talented and there are so very many pretty British actresses.Anyway, you won't waste your time on this one. It's worth every minute.

Absolutely 6 STARS!
Since this was based on true events the storyline was close in details. From a Safety and Security mindset the embassy made MANY errors in protecting that embassy. The main entrance was not physically protected with armed police people and alarms. Layering is a technique we use in the USA to slow down a UNKNOWN threat. In any high threat location multiple licensed armed police staff should always be on location with screening tactics to support any aggressors. at the minimum a pocket silent wireless pocket alarm should activate gun resistant locking doors. The police officer was NOT trained adequately to subdue the aggressors, although, he had a gun on him the entire time. Im sure the cop understood the sensitivity of the situation outmanned and outgunned. However, the bad guys had NO idea he was armed and that by itself was a major advantage. I myself would have enlisted the help of a few of the civilians to assist in the escape and or take down of the bad guys leading the way! Armed with the bad guys guns and police training that was an option. Yes, i understand that the hostages were separated and could become a casualty, a choice must be made to live or die! I felt the inside cop did not act as needed and failed to step up to the task he was paid to do! The SAS once given control did an EXCELLENT job, even with equipment failure and a machine gun jam etc... The Queen wanted to send a message to the bad guys dont come to her country and expect tea and donuts unwanted! That SAS rescue set the country up for NO more bad guys for over a DECADE! The SAS could have entered through the ide adjacent wall ALSO (but failed to) only using two entry points limiting and forcing backtracking to allow entry at a jam point inside. WHile I am not a current tactical enforcement operator the overall rescue was great. Thank you to the SAS for their bravery and taking the time NOT to accidentally kill innocent hostages.

A great film, brings the past to life
This is a great recreation of the Iranian London Embassy siege, by the SAS/SBS, and only two hostages were lost. Which according to my friend is a 99% success rate. What the film creators have done is take a historical event, and presented it as a modern scene of engagement. Which, to their credit this siege is now looked at across the world, as the expert model to learn from, which we did do in recent modern conflicts, thank God!

Highly recommend watching this film
I was in my teens when I actually saw the BBC report live on this. Always wondered who were those black hooded men who rescued the hostages. Now I can see how it was played and carried out by these professional men of conviction and dedication. Highly recommend watching this film.
