![Nicholas Nickleby [DVD] [1977]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91vjaTfzkvL.jpg)

Nigel Havers stars as the young Nicholas Nickleby, cruelly thrown out into the world to seek his fortune, in the BBC's triumphant adaptation of one of Charles Dickens' most celebrated novels. Darkly satirical, angry, funny, hugely entertaining - and filled with the richest assortment of oddball characters - Nicholas Nickleby features Nigel Havers in his first leading role. Includes Freddie Jones, Liz Smith and Patricia Routledge. Review: Although almost 50 years old still a relevant film - Good plot and good acting. Value for money Review: Nicholas Nickleby DVD by the BBC - Very good. I'm not a Dickens expert or aficionado but this DVD chimed well with the book, which I have just finished listening to. Some bits, naturally, had to be left out, but by and large this was a good representation of the book.

Nicholas Nickleby DVD.
A most enjoyable DVD, because although elements of the story are, of necessity, omitted, there is fine acting which reflects Dickens' characters well. The scenes reflect clearly the drabness of what, for many, was the harsh reality of Victorian England. It is not to be recommended for those who like bombs, high speed car chases and explosions every five minutes. However, for those who prefer the variety of character development and a glimpse of a broad spectrum of humanity, it is well worthwhile.

CHARLES DICKENS MASTERPIECE !
THE STORY OF NICHOLAS NICKLEBY HAS EVERYTHING - LOVE - PASSION - BETRAYAL - BRUTAILITY - HUMOUR - SUICIDE - INTRIGUE - PHILANTHROPY ETC IT IS TEH COMPLETE NOVEL. THE CHARACTERSS ARE ALL LARGER THAN LIFE AND ARE WONDERFULLY PORTRAYED IN THIS BBC VIDEO PRODUCTION. NIGEL HAVERS IS ONE OF BRITAINS FINEST ACTORS - HE WAS THE HURDLER IN "CHARIOTS OF FIRE". HIS PORTARYAL OF NICHOLAS NICKELBY IS A MASTERPIECE AND WILL NEVER BE BETTERED. JOHN KNIGHT. HIGHY RECOMMENDED

NEVER MIND NIGEL I STILL LOVE YOU
Only bought it because Nigel was in it, but most of the parts are over acted, spent much of the time reaching for remote to turn the sound down, worst production of N.N I have ever seen.

Very Classy
This production has a distinct visual sophistication, and the story is a very interesting albeit occasionally tiresome one that is almost perfectly adapted for the screen, packing many interesting punches, twists and turns along the way with some very enjoyable characters and performances. It may not be flawless, but it certainly does its job as entertaining Sunday teatime drama

BBC at its best
Superb production. The acting was first-class, the costumes exactly right, the music dramatic enough (but it wasn't credited as to who wrote it at the end.) Nigel Havers stars brilliantly, as Nicholas, and the wicked Ralph Nickleby is firmly to the fore.

Another Dickens
It is long since I read Dickens and in fact I cannot remember much about Nickolas Nickleby as a book. This Mini Series - which I chose as being the longest and therefore probably with a greater part of Dickens included, I found quite disappointing. This may be Dickens fault - the main characters are boring while the secondary characters - usually the forte in Dickens - are so bad from the very start it leaves nothing to the imagination at all.

This is a wonderful rendition of the book. Although the book has a more complex plot with more divine Dickens characters, this film gets the essence right. Loved it!

A very good 6 part series, starring Nigel Havers as Charles Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby. (1977, region 2/PAL format, English subtitles.)
