In his directorial debut, Buddhist lama Neten Chokling vividly presents the captivating story of Milarepa, the man who would become Tibet s greatest yogi and saint. In the dramatic setting of 11th century Tibet- a time of roaming sorcerers and yogis, according to Buddhist legend- a young Milarepa falls into a world of betrayal and hardships. The greed of others upturns his privileged life, dropping him into a void of despair, humiliation, pain and anger. He sets out to learn black magic- and exact revenge on his enemies- encountering magicians, demons, an enigmatic teacher and unexpected mystical power along the way. But it is in confronting the consequence of his quest for vengeance that he learns the most. Filmed on the breathtaking scenic Indo-Tibetan border, with Tibetan monks serving as most of the cast and crew, Milarepa glows with a unique visual and spiritual charge.

An introduction to Buddhism.
This is a double disc pack. The first disc is a film on the life of Milarepa a very famous Buddhist monk. It has quite an old fashioned slightly clunky feel but some beautiful shots and a good outline of his life story. Having read a book about his life as well, it does not go into some of the serious trials his master put him through but makes it all seem quite an easy journey. The second disc contains a series of talks but a variety of Buddhist teachers which, for me, were of varying appeal.

Just a caution
I am a little disappointed because it was Not made Clear - that this film is Not voiced over in English. And that It is solely in the Tibetan tongue. It is in fact subtitled, but these are far too small and come and go needlessly quickly. As a result one is forced to sit close up to the screen and constantly be rewinding. This spoils the enjoyability of the film somewhat, as I ne cannot just sit back and take it all in. Which is what one really wants to and needs do with a film of this nature. But despite this, It's still a worthwhile buy and I recommend would recommend it to others. Something, deep, meaningful and poignant still comes through and in a rather unique way in this film.

A well documented film but this DVD will only take ...
A well documented film but this DVD will only take you as far as when Milarepa meets his first Buddhist monk and begins to turn towards Buddhism and the Dhamma. For the rest of the story you need to purchase part 2 which I am unable to track down. Apparently made in 2009.

Pure emptiness
Empty, empty, empty... but that's the REAL point of Buddhist teachings, of course.

Great Imagery
I read the biography of Milarepa and the film captured the images I had whilst reading the book perfectly. It was made all the more realistic with the cast being Tibetan. Although it was a shame the film stopped short of his Buddhist life it was was compelling watching and I look forward to the sequel I believe is underway.
