Powerful Little EDC Flashlight The ThruNite Saber is an excellent small EDC flashlight. At 600 lumens, it’s surprisingly bright for its size and very practical for everyday carry. I like that it runs on AA rechargeable batteries, making it easy to keep powered up anywhere. The clip is sturdy, and the build quality feels solid. Compact, reliable, and high-performing—great value for an EDC light.

I haven't had this small EDC torch for very long, but am very pleased so far. The brightness and power of the beams in both operating modes are more than I expected and easily meet my needs. Even the low power mode is brighter than any 3 x D battery flashlight you have ever used. The amount of light from the high power mode is hard to believe coming from such a little guy. I also really like that a single plain AA battery works in a pinch and is still just as bright in low mode. Overall, this is a well made, tightly fit and high quality product. So far, so good and I would definitely buy again. Will modify this opinion if things change in the future. Edit 12/27/2024: I was checking out the Saber 659 some more and put a rechargeable AA NiMH battery in. Surprise!, now the unit also had a low *and* high mode, similar to that with the included Li-ion. The low mode is the same as with AA Li-ion and standard alkaline, but unlike both, it has a high mode about half the intensity of the Li-ion. I don't know how long this high mode works in comparison to Li-ion, but hey, unlike the standard AA, at least it *has* a high mode! I had been disappointed somewhat in that ThruNite doesn't seem to say anywhere in their specs that standard AA batteries work only in low mode. I think I had to view the video comments to find this out before I purchased. Now discovering that NiMH AA also has both a low and high operating mode is a usability bonus to me. I think this adds a second good power source option in a pinch, as with AA standard and another reason to like how the Saber 659 operates. Try this out for yourself and see what you think.

I have been pleasantly surprised with this little light. It's a great functioning unit, good quality, and sells for a reasonable price. It's single AA sized small but very bright. Clicking it ON puts it into low mode which uses less power and lights up the path in front of you very well, keeping you from stepping in a hole. Clicking it OFF then back ON again puts it into high mode which is good for scanning out farther distances and keeping you from getting too close to a skunk. I like the rechargeable battery and also the way the flashlight is designed to use it. The battery is taken out of the unit and recharges with a USB C charger on the counter top. If you're in a pinch and don't have time to charge it, you can toss in a regular AA battery and use the light until the recharge finishes. I've been using it for about 5 months and I'm still very happy with this purchase.

Nice and bright on the high setting (695 lumens), and it seems to be well built. It has a rechargeable AA battery that is removeable, so you can substitute a regular AA alkaline battery in a pinch. I take off one star because the on/off switch on the tail is hard plastic and it also takes a lot of finger force to depress. Looking on the bright side (pun intended), I suppose it could be argued that the stiff switch insures that the light won't be switched on accidently when it is carried in your pocket. Be that as it may, I plan to keep the light to stock in a vehicle or backpack first aid kit. As a side note, I notice this listing is for several different options, with different lumens, different case colors and at widely different prices. This can be confusing to the shopper, and I think it would be better to split them into separate listings, with links between each.

...The ThruNite Saber. [EDIT 6/21: Still a great flashlight, but some issues have come up since the initial review. These have been added where relevant. I left the rest of the review pretty much untouched, to retain the first impressions along with the new info] I was looking for a quick-grab light that would perform well on either a *normal* AA or AAA (whether or not high-voltage batteries were supported), and after having spent an embarrassing number of hours researching different flashlight specs, watching/reading reviews, looking up manuals, evaluating UI experiences, then making some purchases and returns… this one just came out on top. It was simply the one I wanted in my pocket (second place was the Olight I3t 2 EOS, which I kept). PROS: - Very simple UI: single click (or half press) turns on at low, second click (or half press) turns on at high. Always reverts to low after a short timer, no mode memory - Absolutely UNTOUCHABLE performance claims on a NiMH AA battery [EDIT 6/21: the Lumintop Tool AA 3.0 actually can compete with the Saber, with more lumens and longer runtimes, but with a mediocre inverted switch, and confusing UI]: 75 minutes on a 2,450 mAh NiMH at 235 lumens - with NO claim of any thermal or timed brightness stepdown. [EDIT 6/21: I did a 5-minute test where I ran the light for that long, then compared it to another Saber I have right after turning the second one on - I'm happy to say the one that had run for 5 minutes was almost indistinguishable in brightness from the fresh one] No other light I found in my research even came close to those numbers - Extremely useful light mode levels (IMO) on a normal AA: 25 lumens on low, 235 lumens on high. I find these levels almost perfectly meet the needs of when I personally need/use a flashlight - Runs beautifully on a Pale Blue fixed-voltage 1.5v rechargeable AA (to avoid gradual dimming as voltage decreases) [EDIT 6/21: Unfortunately, when I was doing intentional duration tests, the Pale Blue battery cut out at exactly 3 minutes... so, back to Eneloops, until I can test the XTAR fixed-1.5V batteries that are on the way] - Solid build, so far not showing any significant scratches on the body or lens despite being loose in my pocket with keys and such [EDIT 6/21: I ordered 2 more Sabers, a green and a gray - the green one has a scratchier and weaker switch, and the lens on the gray one wasn't glued in correctly, and had bubbles underneath. So, definitely some quality-control issues. Just inspect your light well after you receive it] - The beam is an excellent balance of bright hotspot and spill. The center can throw *much* farther than the other lights I have with similar lumen counts, but there’s enough surrounding light to not feel like tunnel-vision (Note: the Pale Blue I’m running is pinning the light at a perfect 1.5v, so I’m always running at the max possible performance beneath a 14500 battery) [EDIT 6/21: Again, issues with the Pale Blue battery after all] CONS: - Main body is too smooth… the token grooves in the sides don’t really help much with grip, and there’s no real waist to speak of… not bad overall grip, but not great - The button, though reliable, is metal, and clearly allows dust to collect in the groove around it. It can also be a liiiitle bit scratchy at times as the metal of the button slides against the metal casing - When using the included high-voltage battery (which I don’t), the flashlight gets quite hot (though not as hot as another light I tried, the Acebeam Pokelit AA, which I returned, since it was inferior to the Saber in every possible way except build quality) - Not sure if this is really a con, but the low light mode seems warmer than the high mode for some reason Again… I did a lot of research, and tried other lights, but even with the cons I just mentioned, this light stood out from the crowd, and was just a winner for me. It’s in my pocket as I write this, and I’ve already ordered a second one. Buy it with confidence (ESPECIALLY if you want to run a NiMH or Pale Blue, like I do), and avoid the Acebeam Pokelit AA at all costs. Thanks for reading!

I needed a small robust rechargeable flashlight that fits in my pocket for my work. This flashlight has a sturdy metal body that is waterproof to 2 meters, built to take abuse and keep working. It has a nice strong clip to grab onto a pocket securely. I like that it is simply a flashlight with a low and high power setting controlled by a click of a button. The bright setting puts out a lot of light, much more than you would expect from a flashlight this small, it is brighter than my large high lumen flashlight! When you use the high setting the front of the flashlight heats up. It is rechargeable but you have to take the battery out and the battery has a USB plug. This is the only thing about this flashlight that I do not like, but I cannot complain for the price. I have a picture of it next to a pen to give a better representation of its size. It is an outstanding value.

Thrunite has done a really great job with this new flashlight. The Saber is going to be major competition for the Olight i5r. The two lights are basically identical in size. But I really like the lumen outputs on the Saber much better than the i5r. The beam pattern is also much tighter and the hot spot will give you some pretty good distance for such a small light. It also produces a lot more intensity because of the high candela. Very simple to operate. One click for low and then you have several seconds to click over to high. Whereas the i5r had to be clicked "very" quickly to obtain the high mode. Which would be confusing for some operators unfamiliar with flashlights. The Saber will always turn on in the low mode. And I really like the hard plastic feeling tail cap compared to the traditional rubber tail caps on most flashlights. It seems like it will be very durable over the long-term. THE THRUNITE BRANDED 920 mah RECHARGEABLE BATTERY IS INCLUDED WITH THE FLASHLIGHT! The battery is very nice quality and has an onboard c-type charger. And the really great thing about the Saber is... It will also operates with standard AAA alkaline batteries. Great for in a pinch. And the lumen output is still really good with a standard alkaline battery. But you only get the real high brightness from the included 14500 3.7 volt battery. And at the price these things are selling for YOU CAN'T BEAT IT! The only room for improvement on this particular light would be the pocket clip. It's a little on the flimsy side but it does get the job done. But it's not quite as beefy as the i5r pocket clips that you might be used to. But definitely not a deal breaker. I would recommend picking up a few of these flashlights, especially while they're on sale.

Very bright for its small size. Very comfortable for carry in side pocket with EDC knife. However I can say that the quality was very much lacking. Within a few days of receiving the light, I dropped it at work, on a concrete floor. But I was in a kneeling position so a foot off the ground i would estimate is as far as I dropped it. The light immediately went out. Assuming the worst i pulled the lens but did not see any visible damage. No cracked lens or reflector. No LED hanging off something. So I grabbed a standard lithium battery to put in the flashlight and that got me just a very faint glow on bright with a fresh AA. But nothing more. So dim it was almost imperceptible. While looking at the battery I noticed that the positive post on the rechargeable Thrunite battery was slightly recessed into the top of the battery itself. And would no longer light up green while charging. Red forever. And didn’t seem to power anything. No matter what application. So while I was initially impressed with the brightness and size at such a low price point, the first time I dropped it from a foot off the ground the light stopped lighting up, with any type of battery. And the rechargeable battery that was supplied was too short to ever work again without some sort of grounding material stuffed in the negative end to make up the 1/8” lost due to minor drop.
