I had several bald spots as big as 3 x 4 ft. My soil is very hard and in a shady area. I used a garden claw to churn up the top inch or so, then put down a half inch of miracle grow potting soil in the bald spots, sprinkled in the seed, gently covered and watered it daily (we went a few weeks without real rain after Easter here in northern Kentucky) It’s filling in nicely.
