Very good but not quite outstanding. 4.5 stars
The writing and photo selection are outstanding. There are lots of photos from Durango, Alamosa, Antonito, and Chama, but also lots of photos from lesser-known places. I enjoyed reading the essays, and many of the photos have extended captions that tell a story. Overall the book is well worth your money. I just wish the book had been printed on a higher grade paper. On a handful of photos the details aren't as clear as I wish. But if you're a fan of the Colorado narrow gauge, you really need this book.

Exceptional Photography
Book combines an excellent map, an interesting narrative, and exceptional photographs to illustrate the closing years of the Denver and Rio Grande narrow gauge from Alamosa to Silverton. The photographs of the remains of the railway in the Cumbres and Toltec, and Durango and Silverton tourist lines conclude the story told by the historic images from the 1960s with suitable, stunning modern photography.A must-buy for anyone interested in the narrow gauge railways of Colorado and New Mexico.

A narrow gauge steam railroad way of life that has gone forever
A superb narrow gauge steam railroad album of a way of life that has gone forever. Great quality photos mainly black and white but some in colour of steam in the spectacular scenery of the American southwest that makes this book an essential for any steam railroad enthusiast interested in railroad back country byways and their environs. Very nostalgic.

Lovely book on the D&RGW in the 1960s.
A superb look at the last days of the narrow gauge Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in the 1960s from some of Americas greatest railroad photographers notably the photos of Victor Hand which particularly enhance this volume. Highly recommended for those who love the narrow gauge. The repro is not quite as good as some previous CRPA volumes but this does not detract from the overall quality of the book.
