Does this piece fit pretty smoothly with Thomas wooden tracks & Orbium ones too?

It fits perfectly with ours. This is one of my son's favorite pieces.

What happens when you turn the crank on the water barrel?

Nothing happens. It just turns and we pretend that’s when the water comes out to clean the trains. My little one has fun turning it and making “water” noises.

Will the batter trains fit thru this? They are a a little larger than normal brio trains...

Battery blue travel engines will fit through but you have to push it through. The blue foam blades are enough to stop electric train wheels forward movement and the arch on the far side is a snug fit. But, trains can easily be pushed through..... and no, there is no real water involved as you would expect, but a 4-5 year old asking for it may not realize this.
