Great HG of Wing Zero. Solid build
Know what you’re getting into here: this is a model kit. You will receive the parts to build this action figure along with instructions. Once it’s done, you can pose it and it comes with the accessories from the anime. Luckily, you don’t need glue or really any experience. Just cut out the parts with small scissors and follow the pictures in the instructions to put it together. it’s similar to Lego in that respect, as you don’t need to read text to understand the instructions, just look at the clear pictographs. The parts are numbered on the parts sheet and the parts sheets are labeled uniquely. The instructions tell you which parts you need for which steps, so you just cut them out as needed. That way you won’t get confused. You can start with this HG as your first gunpla, I imagine many did as Gundam Wing is popular. Building gunpla can be fun, calming, and rewarding. it’s the sort of thing you can come back to and do in multiple sittings. With that out of the way, let me start my review proper. I enjoyed the build of this. It builds up as a typical HG of around 2014, with less poly caps actually than something like the Astray Red Frame - and more solid out of box compared to it because of that fact. So what I’m trying to say is that once it’s completed, it feels very solid and stiff. it will hold a pose. The articulation of the legs is sub-par overall except for the hips which are above-average especially for 2014 - even Hi-Nu gets ball-joint hips. The articulation of the arms is great with the full double bend in the elbow and can pull off the T-pose. The backpack is very solid and has good options to be displayed.I really like the color scheme of the Wing Zero. All of the Operation Meteor Gundams have a cool color scheme actually. The color separation is great and highly anime accurate. Once complete, if this is your first model kit, you will be impressed. If you’re willing to get a fine-tip sharpie out, then you can be even more impressed. The main detail to be corrected is just on the yellow circles on the shoulders as well as some vents. There are some panel lines on the legs too. Since I’m a gunpla veteran I always detail the face with markers as well. The level of detail is very intricate in this kit for the time and is very anime accurate without any horrible stickers. (I’m looking at you HG 00. Why couldn’t they make the antenna yellow if they made the chest vent yellow?? And only give you clear plastic instead of blue??)The HG Wing Zero is a bit shorter than other typical 1/144 scale Gunpla. If you have any other HG Gundam models or Gundam action figures, it might seem smaller. For example, it’s only up to the shoulder of the HG RX Gundam. Despite this, once it’s loaded up with its accessories, it has a great presence that looks awesome and makes up for that. This kit comes with a lot of surprising movable parts and gimmicks. The shoulder armor is very impressive, as you can move it separately to the shoulder itself and it can split open at two points for a very cool “opened” look that I’m not sure if was even in the anime. I know that it’s the combination of the beam saber hatch and thrust hatch open at the same time though. Anyway, the Shield also has an extension gimmick which is a cool bonus that I didn’t know about, and of course the beam rifle can separate into two different guns for dual-wielding. Not much to be said about the backpack besides it can be displayed as opened or closed and the wings can change angle once opened. Looks awesome though and can be swapped with other HG gundam models. And yes - This model kit can transform into the airplane form. Transformers and anime fans rejoice! The only part you need to swap is the feet unfortunately. If they put more effort into the design of the feet, they would not have needed to swap out. It’s cool that the feet have a separate thruster in the sole, even if they can’t bend. Idk where else to add that lol.Besides the limited articulation in the legs, I have only one main complaint. That is in the design of the shoulder joint in this kit. The poly cap socket that holds the ball-joint of the arm is aligned to swing forward. This is normal for HG, and it allows more movement and is always a plus. In this kit however, the socket can actually sink into the body. If you don’t display it this way, it will look strange as the arms are a bit too far out, so it seems they actually intended you to press the shoulders inward for a neutral pose. It’s strange as this can cause it to get caught in there and pop the ball joint out when you try to pull the arm forward. A bit of a weird design but no big deal.Anyway, all in all, This kit is very solid, fun to build, fun to pose, Anime accurate, and has some cool options to display it in because of the different gimmicks and transformation. So to me, that ticks every box to be an excellent HG. It’s not the tallest Gundam, but it has great detail, cool colors, and an awesome set of thruster wings.
