The old war horse suffered static shock during a lightening storm and refused to boot. My data is already safe in an external USB 3 JBOD, so I didn't need something as big as the Microserver to replace it. And if the HP machine was micro, this NUC 11 is nano...or indeed femto!. It is a very diddy indeed!So, once I stopped admiring the pretty little device, I wired it up, wiped the installed Microsoft Windows OS, installed Ubuntu Linux 22.04 Server in a matter of minutes and then reinstalled Plex. After the usual time-honoured Linux tradition of fiddling with settings, I got Intel QuickSync support working.What does this mean? It means hardware transcoding. It gives the ability to re-encode movie files for various devices on the fly, without straining the main processor cores. The old server had a chunky NVIDIA add-in PCI Express card for these duties...but this little beauty does it right on the 11th generation "Jasper Lake" Intel Celeron N5105 CPU!No hulking metal case, no big whirring fans, no spinning rust, no power-hungry dedicated GPU. Just a cute little black box seamlessly transcoding 4K videos in real-time!
