Review: Great for Motivation - In dysfunctional families ( whose isnโt), we are often teased and punished for having an idea and not immediately reaching that goal. Same with many new thought manifestation philosophies. This book looks at change in stages, explaining a more holistic process, that opens the way for greater self acceptance and self compassion. I am grateful for the authors wisdom and insight into human nature. Review: Exact stages of change and why people don't move forward, and how to get them there - Excellent book. Great resource
This book is important to me as a resource for the training I do with social service staff in Motivational Interviewing. I checked it out from the library first, but then decided I needed my own copy. The authors' work is at the foundation of all the training I have received and deliver on the subject, and it's great to get their current take on this important and changing field of understanding. Also, the book has pragmatic applications that can serve as tools for positive change in many situations.

Maybe OK for professionals, but pretty useless for people wanting to change
I bought this book because I am already taking action to improve my eating habits and lose weight. I wanted to know how to develop lasting habits to support the changes I want to make. Instead, this book, obviously designed for clinicians, makes you wade through chapters about how to motivate people who are not yet motivated to change, which is irrelevant to me. Then it makes you go through chapters about making changes to quit smoking and quit drinking, etc., all of which were not my problem. The amount of information about making positive changes for weight loss was minimal, and what was there was based on out of date ideas like "minimizing" fast food and cookies and cutting calories by 500 per day.

It explains so much I had struggled with working on myself and with clients, friends and family, to change habits. It explains why we are great and disciplined with some areas of our life and other areas failure. If you are struggling with weight, alcohol, or any bad habits, this will show you how to change naturally and without any threats of having to take 'massive action' or anything like that. Why they don't get more press attention, why it isn't used by more of the medical profession is not a mystery, but a terrible shame for anyone who isn't thriving and loving life.
