Combat focused d&d lite
This is an incredible game, and sommuch value for money. First note for those unsure, this is not a simple or straightforward game to play. There are also of rules and mechanics in play at one time, lots of moving parts to the puzzle. However, the phone app that you download to play makes keeping track of everything alot easier, and has an in app "rules reference". Basically a rule encyclopedia. The value for money in this is incredible. Yes, it's pricey, but you get figurines for all 6 heroes, the bbeg, and multiple of each enemy type (ranging between 2 and 4) for 2 trays full of figurines. Not to mention 18 reversible "tiles" that create the game play area as you progress, dozens of scenery pieces, tokens, and multiple card decks for items, armours, skills and weapons. All of which is very well made, and the figurines come unpainted so you can have the joy of painting them yourselves. As for time to play, expect hours lost to the game. We have a group running a campaign and, after completing 2 quests, we're pushing theb8 hour mark. Each scenario, or quest, takes about 2 to 4 hours to complete. And there are multiple quests across the campaign. All of which is told using beautiful artwork, music and cut scenes within the phone app. Which helps guide you through each fight, every turn, every interaction, even the city between each quests is interactable through the app.All in all, if you have the patience for it, this is an incredible game that is well thought out, well made, well developed and well worth the money.

expensive and not playable with older MacBook
I ordered as the price was reduced but the box arrived split so replacement sent and that arrived damaged too. Not offered another replacement or discount so both returned. Software won't not work on 4 year old MacBook but have a tablet which does work. I would like to write a better review but didn't try the game as box was damaged and needed to be sent back as received

Awesome game for rookies and veterans alike.
This game is just awesome! It appeals to the casual gamer or the hard core gaming veterans alike. The reason is:1) First of all it is relatively simple. Rules are clear, backed up by clever examples and figures. And you don't spend hours and your eye sight trying to figure out how far your archer can shoot or if the spell hits the goblin that is behind the corner etc. As a result you don' battle the board itself but the Overlord before you (or the heroes if you are the Overlord).2) I am an old D&D player and Dungeon Master (DM) and I have played many games in my time.. This game brings you the hack&slash fun that you get from a D&D campaign but yet without the hassle and preparation demanded from the DM. It's easy and fast to set-up and the "campaign" is cleverly divided into sub quests that are usually over in 1-2 hours. Once its over you can "save" your current character, with all his/her loot, experience, skills etc and resume form where you had left of in the following week.. So just like a D&D campaign Descent 2.0 has the heroes grow over time, get better loot armor etc and get awesome skills that promise fire and destruction upon the hordes of the Overlord!3) The Overlord, -the player that is running the show- is actually a player himself/herself! So unlike a D&D game the Overlord does not try to "facilitate" the game but actively seeks to destroy heroes with his monsters and his card deck of devious plots, fiendish traps, poisoned chests etc.. as a result, while this game is a cooperative adventure for heroes, it is exactly the opposite for the Overlord. The Overlord, just like the heroes gets experience and even more rewards for beating the heroes and grows in power and ability. There are many paths an Overlord can choose in building his/her "character".4) It has immense replayability. Every quest has "open groups" meaning that the Overlord chooses which monster to field depending on the type terrain the heroes are at. So one game you can summon blood thirsty Barghests and in another mighty Shadow Dragons for the exact same quest... Also there are 8 heroes (right out of the box) and 8 different hero classes to choose from.. As if that was not enough, results of earlier quests influence what quest you play later on.. Believe me no single campaign will ever be the same.. Fantasy Flight Games has even an online quest generator where faithful of the community post their own quests or you can share your own..5) Miniatures. Let's all pause here a minute... The moment that I knew I had to get my hands on this game is when I had watched Rodney Smith play Descent on Youtube with painted miniatures.. Did I not only get this game I also got into miniature painting as well. So now all of our heroes are already painted and monsters are 30% complete... The detail on these miniatures are astounding and it is pure bliss to paint them (I also added our current party along with some heroes and monsters that are already painted).."And the downside?" you ask.. Well I am yet to find out.. We are having incredible fun with our gaming group and we can never seem to get enough of Descent 2.0.. Oh, and yes, there is one downside actually, once you get into Descent you might as well forget your other games for a very long while :)One other thing is that once you get into the world of Descent 2.0 be prepared to hoard everything FFG has to offer in terms of expansions, campaigns, figures etc.. You certainly don't have to, the base game is just enough to get you going and playing for hours on end.. but you will definitely want to! :)

Further Journeys In The Dark
This is the first expansion for the excellent Descent: Journeys In The Dark second edition. You will require the base game to play this expansion. This box of goodies will add several elements to the base game which can be incorporated in a few ways.Firstly - new heroes!! 2 new adventurers join the fray - each with their own deck of class cards, being The Champion class and The Geomancer class.New Monsters - Fire Imps and Hybrid Sentinels are also included, each with their own cards of course. The miniatures for these additions are, as usual, nicely detailed and for those of you that like to paint your miniatures, these are a good little challenge in their own right and well worth the effort. In total this expansion has 10 miniatures to add to your game. You also get some new map boards, some additional travel cards, loot and Overlord cards. Basically every part of the base games gets a boost with the content from this expansion. Plus it adds a new feature - the Secret Room. This can be added to any quest from this or the base game to excellent effect. Who doesn't love a Secret Room when playing a dungeon crawler?Along with this is your quest guide. This expansion has 5 new quests. These can be played in various ways - you can play each as a standalone quest, you can play all 5 as a miniature campaign, and best of all these can be played into the huge quest from the base game which are linked by way of the rumour card deck. This means you can have a lot of fun with this inexpensive expansion. This is also designed to work with all forthcoming expansions. This shows great things ahead for the 2nd edition of Descent, and continues the excellent releases being put out by Fantasy Flight Games.Anyone that loves Descent: Journeys In The Dark second edition should definitely add this to their game sessions.
