They're warm, maybe not warm enough to mitigate 8-12 hours outside in blistering freezing weather or something but they're definitely warm enough to wear out and about in the winter, shoveling the driveway, working in the garage, etc. They're understandably thick but you can still shove your foot in your sneakers with them on, snug but not impossible. The inside feels a little rougher when you touch it with your hands - don't expect a cashmere-like soft interior - but your feet will not notice. It's almost like a 70s loop rug on the inside, it's not silky but it's not scratchy or irritating either. They breathe well, they wash fine - no noticeable shrinkage or alteration in texture. My only complaint - which isn't really a complaint at all - is that I wish they made this same sock but shorter. Since they're boot socks there is a lot of extra height that's not always wanted or needed, or just gets in the way if you're not wearing high boots. $25+ per pair of sock is a bit much but these aren't really everyday socks unless you're using them for work or spend a lot of time outside in Canadian winters... in that case I would recommend double-layering some cheaper socks and investing in better boots.

These are easily the best made winter socks I've ever owned. A lot of thought has gone into their design and construction, down to a slight thinning of the weave on the arch where most shoes tie up. While they're not made to be beautiful the overall impression is very pleasant. A big surprise, considering the price and the high wool content was that these beauties are made in USA. I liked them so much I purchased another pair. It's later winter in southern Australia and the weather has turned quite warm, so I doubt I'll get too much wear out of them this season. If they resist pilling and wear they'd warrant 7 stars, they're that good. Amazon's size guide suggested X-large, but at 11.5US I am right at the top of the Large range and the socks fit perfectly. Previous experience with US socks in X-large indicates that it's better to be at the top of the size range in socks rather than at the bottom of the next size up. None of the American socks I've purchased previously (not necessarily made there) have come close to these Carhartts in quality.
