I have an older craftsman router and the bit would only go in the collet until about 3-4 mm of the shaft below the "insert in router to the line" line was still sticking out . I figured that would be sufficient if I was careful with the amount of pressure I put on the bit. I was wrong. It worked better than any other router I've used, right up until I pushed it too fast (was working with a small oak slab, so that did not help). The shaft warped a bit and developed a distinct vibration, becoming unsafe. I put it in a modern trim router where I could get it to the "insert in router to the line" line and tightening it. The vibration went away, but the bit was then too short to do what I needed. So, if you have an old Craftsman An likely other brands), this bit is not for you.
