Magic spout and stopper win the day!
So I've had a gravy separator before and loved being able to use the juices from cooking the roast to make my own gravy. My old one bit the dust so I went looking for a new one and found this Oxo one. It was all exactly the same apart from the red stopper. It claimed to prevent the fat entering the spout. It sounded too good to be true and I could never work out how this magic was supposed to happen (and I'd searched the reviews in vain to figure it out!).Well, today was about the fourth time I've used it, and on this occasion (roast beef) there was loads of fat and lots of juices (as I'd added hot water to the pan and scraped off all the browning and herbs etc). The red stopper was in the spout from the outset, and lo and behold, this time, I could clearly see that the fat was being held back and was much higher in the main jug than the liquid in the spout. Amazing! (See photo)It turns out there is only a thin aperture from the main jug into the spout which lets the juice at the bottom through. I'm no physicist but I'm guessing that the air pressure from the air held in the spout, held in by the stopper, keeps the gravy from shooting up the spout to equalise the levels, as you would usually see.I poured the juices out until the fat was about to come through, and then afterwards the fat was left behind - hooray!

Another solid tool from OXO - works well
Edit - review update after usingI confirm my 5 star for this. It seems slightly odd to ram the stopper into the spout and then pour the fatty gravy into it but only a tiny bit of the liquid migrates into the bottom of the spout keeping all the oil/fat where you want it. Once it has settled, removing the stopper let's you pour almost to the last drop without getting any fat out. My only regret is that I didn't buy the bigger one first time around. Typical piece of OXO kit, by which I mean, good quality.Original reviewBah humbug, I bought the 500ml one by mistake (meant to get the 1000ml) after flicking back and forth between different brands/pictures, my mistake but take care before confirming order.I have't used it yet but it looks solid enough and the capacity will undoubtedly do the job for my wife and I and probably for 4 but not sure how I'll manage when I am making gravy for 8 - 12.This is a better design than the previous type I used which had a cock-eyed method of blocking the spout hole with an integral part of the strainer/handle that was poking down inside, all very clumsy. Was glad when it fractured and started to crack up. I will update if there is anything to add but every OXO product I have used to date has been quality so I expect the same from this.PeterFromSandhurst

Cheap and nasty version of what it used to be
I bought this as a replacement for one with exactly the same description (and image) that I'd originally purchased in 2013, that had somehow gone missing from the kitchen. I was very happy with the old one, for which I think I paid about £7, but not only was the new one about three times as expensive, but it was much flimsier and more cheaply made, using thinner plastic. To add insult to injury, the strainer from the old one (which I've still got) doesn't even fit in the cheap and nasty new one.

I wish I had bought this years ago!
The wide opening with the "strainer" holes is genius and mean you don't have to be too accurate when pouring the pan juices from the roasting pan into it. It is large enough to hold a lot of juice. As it is large it is fairly easy to clean (the spout is trickier)And the fat is separated very quickly and easily. If you are looking for a fat separator, I highly recommend it. This is the best one I have used to date. Oh and don't forget to keep the silicon stopper in the spout as you pour your pan juices in or some of the fat will end up escaping into the spout!

Good for large amounts of juice
Works great for a very large joint useless for small ones as the spout depth is so large

At last something that works
Have tried out various fat separator products for gravy making, and this is the only one I have found that actually works. It’s very easy to use. Cleaning is simple, except you need a narrow bottle brush to make sure the pouring spout is fully cleaned out.
