It's at my daughter's home, but it think a small Phillips-head screwdriver was required. Seems like a lot of trouble, but it also keeps the kid from opening it and swallowing a battery. Hope this helps.

It does not, and the light is also pretty dim.

Q: Can you replace the plastic lens

Short answer is: I do not know if the lens maybe replaced. Overall have not been happy with the product due to the dimness of the light and weight of the product.
