We have Ponderosa pines around the house & the needles clog downspouts almost solid.** A: I can't verify pine needles but the are worthless for maple seeds and locust leaves. These tend to bunch up at the strainers , get soggy and turn into mush, eventually clogging the strainer and overflowing the gutters. I used them for five years and had to clean out the gutters near the strainers to keep the water flowing. I would not recommend them as a solution when seeds or small, fine leaves are concerned. **Q: Are there two or four strainers in a package? Different info on two places in product description!** A: Hello, The gutter guard filter strainer is a pack of 2 units. **Q: Could you insert these in the bottom of a downspout to keep wildlife from getting in and climbing up?** A: I haven't tried but you probably could, provided you put a rivet or screw on each side to hold them in place (to prevent them from falling out due to the force of heavy water outflow). What I've done with mine is to cut oversized pieces of screen mesh, place them over the end of the downspout and keep them in place either with extra thick strong rubber bands or a plumbers pipe clamp (zip ties would work too) **Q: Can I cut these so the holes are wider to allow more rainwater to enter hence avoiding clogs?** A: Water doesn't struggle to pass. Larger holes would allow more debris to pass into down spout and increase chance of clog there. This won't stop a clog, it only keeps it out of down spout. You need to pair this with a gutter guard that covers the entire top of the gutter. That's important for me because we have a long rather narrow drain pipe that drains some distance away, and the roof collection area isn't big enough to collect enough rain water to flush out the pipe.
