Enjoyable on a cold evening
I have had other brands of amazake which were stronger miso flavor, then rice, then sweet. This one is served warm and has bits of rice in it (not smooth) and is very comforting. Aroma is lightly miso but flavor is rice and then sweetness. We really enjoyed it! Perfect on a cool winter evening

Very sweet, slightly goopy and grainy, best served cold
I have no idea what this is SUPPOSED to taste like, because even when I traveled to Hakone Japan, I didn't know about amazake or go to the temple where it is served. Regardless, it has a VERY sweet, rice flavor and a little bit of a porridge like grainy and gooey consistency. I think it is better served cold than hot, the cold makes it seem a little less sweet. I won't be buying this on the regular, but as someone who is biracial Japanese, it was interesting to taste something that is a 1000 year old tradition of my ancestors.

Used it for Chashu
I didn't have any sake on-hand, so I used this as a substitute for sake. It worked very well - even better in my opinion. The Chashu turned out very flavorful and full of umami. Recommend.

Smells bad, tastes bad, super sweet
We made this per the package directions and it was super super sweet but not in a good way. The smell was off putting and it was not enjoyable. I finished my serving but my spouse was not able to finish hers because of the smell and flavor. We were hoping for a mild flavor and the marketed health benefits.

OK amazake, I've had better
This amazake flavor was "ok" but a little on the sour side. The amazake I tried in Kanazawa at a sake brewery was better. Maybe that amazake was fresh and it was much sweeter and light brown so maybe it was mixed with some brown sugar or tea. It tasted better after adding a little sugar. I will try some other brands and compare

This was the first time I tried amazake and would definitely consider buying again. Although any leftover can be refrigerated for later use, I used the whole pouch in one session and those I shared it with also enjoyed it especially with ginger as suggested.

Oh goodness we did not like this. I was really hoping we would got the nutrition benefits of the koji culture. I may have prepared it incorrectly (though I don’t think I did as I followed the simple instructions on the packet) but it was just SO SO HYPER SWEET! I was expecting a bit of sweetness but it was overly sweet to me. It does say on the packet “if flavour is too strong add more water” but I just couldn’t as after one hot mouthful of the stuff I couldn’t bare to sip another. I’m usually very good at forcing myself to eat/drink things in the name of health as well. I have seen than some people serve it over ice or blend it into smoothies, and this might work well in smaller quantities to disguise the taste but I certainly didn’t like it prepared hot and drunk. It tasted like very sweet miso soup. What a shame. Sad to say all but the two sips my daughter and I had (my son and husband refused to try it) went straight in the kitchen waste bin!
