Thirteen Reasons Why: Movie Tie-In

LOVED IT!!
I bought "13 Reasons Why" after hearing so much about it on the internet - and from my 3 sons - and I just knew I had to find out what the hype was all about for myself.Actually I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found it very compelling so I'm a little apprehensive about leaving a positive review after reading so many negative comments about it, but I suppose it is only everyone's opinion.I started reading this book at bedtime and whenever I woke up during the night and throughout the next day when I wasn't reading it, I was constantly thinking about the characters - it had such a pull to it.I didn't have a problem with the writing style at all, the unique way in which the author, Jay Asher, created a dual narrative between Hannah on the tapes and Clay listening to them and commenting was very unusual and new to me, and I really took to it - it played out perfectly in my mind.I imagine everyone knows the blurb to this book so I won't go into that other than it is aimed at a young adult audience. Some people believe that Hannah was selfish and petty with a 'I've been badly done to' attitude but who knows when the straw will break the camel's back? We've probably all experienced bad times at senior school at some point or another and know it can have a very profound effect on your emotions at such a vulnerable age.Does the book glorify suicide? Does it make someone want to go out and take their own life? I have my opinions but you'll have to read the book and decide for yourself. What I do know is - it's a work of fiction and I read it as that, but I'm much older and wiser than most of the average readers of this book and I think that does make a big difference.I don't think I'll be watching the TV show should it make mainstream English TV as it is primarily aimed at a much younger audience and I think I'd rather remember the book is it was originally written.I would say don't be put off by any of the negative reviews you may come across, I dithered for a while over reading it, but I have to say it's a book that I did enjoy reading and I know will stay with me a long time.

Heartbreaking tale of reality
This is a brilliant book that really makes you think. It's a heartbreaking tale about the tough parts of life, and how things can soon spiral out of control, leaving you lost and defenceless. Thirteen Reasons Why is a story where these events lead Hannah to her end. Things got too much for her, she asked for help but no one answered. When there's no one left who cares, what more can you do. It's a novel about the truths of falling into the black hole of depression and losing yourself. I think the main message we get from this book is that you are never alone. It may seem like it but there is always someone out there who cares. Someone who can help. You must never forget this. This is full of truths and these things happen to real people, it's as true and heartbreaking as a story can get. It's one that will leave you thinking for a long time.Thirteen Reasons Why begins when Clay finds a shoebox full of tapes left on his doorstop. When he listens to the first tape, the haunting voice of Hannah Baker greets him. Hannah committed Suicide a few weeks ago, before she did she created these tapes that explained the thirteen reasons that lead to her decision. Each event snowballed into the next creating one big cobweb of problems. Everyone who receives the tapes is featured on one of them. Clay is shocked when he receives them, he hardly knew Hannah. Yes he fancied her but it never went further than one kiss. Listening to the tapes he begins to realise just how much pain Hannah was going through. He's heartbroken when he realises that she asked for his help and he just left. The reality of the truth hurts and he cannot believe what some of the other people did to her. Clay realises that he could have prevented all this but failed, he needs to make sure it never happens again. The story is told by the dual narratives of Hannah and Clay. Clay is an Innocent kind boy just trying to live his life. He has no idea about the chaos of Hannah's life and mind. Clay has liked Hannah for ages but he's always to shy to make a move and now he will never have the chance. Clay soon loses his innocents as he realises the terrible things his classmates have done. How much longer can he live in the shadow and not realise the things and consequences of everyone's actions? We all know there are bad people in the world but we normally just blindside it but Clay has come face to face with these people and he's seen the effect it had on Hannah. He realises that this could happen to anyone and he wants to stop. He wants to succeed where others failed. He will be the one there to help.I loved this book. Yes, it is dark and full of harsh realities but it is so real. It is a true reflection of life and the horrors that can effect you. I personally know the dark effects thoughts and feeling can have on your mind and it isn't something I want other people to go through. There is people to help, even if you think there isn't. I cannot stress enough the importance to talk to someone when you feel down, keeping things bottled inside will only make it worse. This book really hit home with me and I hope it will make other people open their eyes to what could be happening to other people. It's a lesson we all need to learn, especially before it's too late. This book will be one I keep close to me, it's one I think many people should read to understand the dark depths people can fall into to. One day a person could need your help.

A must-have on everyone's bookshelf!
The thing I love best about the book is its originality. I have never come across a storyline even remotely similar to this. When I read, I often find that books follow more or less a similar storyline so I can easily become bored. But this book is so different to anything that I have ever read. This book tackles a serious subject - suicide. Although some have said that Hannah over-reacted about some of the things that happened to her, I don't quite agree. In my opinion, some of the situations are not major and can happen in a lot of people's lives, but the point is how all of these small, seemingly insignificant situations in our eyes, can seem a lot more serious in others. If someone goes through lots of things with hardly anyone to talk to, it's soon going to take a toll on a person's life, as it shows in the book. We have more of an effect on others than we may originally think, and Thirteen Reasons Why is a prime example of the worst possible outcome that bullying and loneliness can lead to.I found the book gripping and once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! I was on the edge the whole time, waiting to see if it was Clay's tape, desperate to know what role he played in Hannah's suicide, and may I say, the outcome is surprising. The end is upsetting and I actually cried, which I don't think has happened to me before when reading a book, but Jay Asher has written Hannah's speeches in such detail that I couldn't help but get emotional.I thoroughly enjoyed Asher's debut novel so don't hesitate to buy Thirteen Reasons Why! You won't regret it!!

One of my favorite books
This book was hard to read, emotionally. It was an intense journey through a teenage girl's life, told after her suicide and what led to it. It's heartbreaking, it keeps you guessing and wondering why these 13 people are named as a reason for her suicide. The way it's told is simply genius. Nothing like I've read before.

A Heart-Wrenching Journey into the Depths of Teenage Despair
As I sat down to read the Thirteen Reasons Why 10th Anniversary Edition, I found myself captivated by the raw vulnerability and emotional rollercoaster that this book took me on. Jay Asher has masterfully crafted a story that delves into the delicate intricacies of teenage life, addressing the dark realities that many young minds grapple with silently. The 10th Anniversary Edition offers a revamped reading experience, with additional content that enhances the story's impact. The author's foreword provides valuable insights into the inspiration behind the book and the impact it has had on readers over the past decade. It serves as a reminder of the importance of discussing mental health and the consequences of our actions, making this edition a must-have for fans and new readers alike.Thirteen Reasons Why presents a unique narrative structure, weaving together the perspectives of the protagonist, Clay Jensen, and the voice of Hannah Baker, the girl who tragically took her own life. The dual narration provides a mesmerizing contrast and keeps the reader engaged, as we unravel the reasons why Hannah decided to end her life. What truly sets this book apart is its ability to tackle sensitive topics such as bullying, depression, and sexual assault with utmost honesty and empathy. Asher handles these themes with care, never trivializing the pain Hannah endured, but rather forcing us to confront the consequences of our actions and the power that our words hold. The character development is exceptional, allowing us to witness the profound impact of Hannah's story on those who receive her tapes. Clay's journey, as he navigates the tapes and confronts his own guilt, is both heart-wrenching and relatable. Through his eyes, we experience the weight of regret and the importance of reaching out to those who might be silently struggling.Thirteen Reasons Why is not an easy read. It's raw, intense, and emotionally draining, but it's also undeniably powerful. It serves as a reminder to be kinder to one another, to listen, and to understand the potential consequences of our actions. While some argue that the book's content is too dark for young readers, I believe that it offers an invaluable opportunity for open discussions about mental health and the importance of compassion. In conclusion, the Thirteen Reasons Why 10th Anniversary Edition is an absolute must-read for anyone who seeks to understand the complexities of teenage life and the impact our choices can have on others.
