Silent Hill: Book of Memories (PlayStation Vita)

If you're reading these reviews then you're probably either a fan of Silent Hill or someone who is interested in dungeon crawlers. I am both, and therefore this game was a must have for me.As other reviewers have mentioned, this is not a traditional survival horror game in any form. Instead, think of Diablo/Dungeon Hunter Alliance in terms of gameplay, even better, download the free demo, that should enable you to make up your mind.The connection to the Silent Hill games is negligible, but it upholds very similar themes and atmospheres to the original series graphically and conceptually. I am of the old-school Silent Hill fan and deem anything made beyond Silent Hill 4 to be poor dilutions of the original spirit of the Silent Hill series, that includes Shattered Memories, Origins, Homecoming and Downpour. Individuals will have very personal attachments to certain installments, but that should not affect how one would enjoy this game. I treat this game; Book of Memories to be a spinoff, unrelated to the main games, which is exactly what it is.Moving on, with regards to the gameplay, you are able to create your own avatar and assign skill points to attributes such as strength, defense, agility etc. Kill monsters, collect loot, and buy stronger equipment to beat down those pesky creatures. If you love dungeon crawlers or Action-Rpgs in general then you'll have a fun time wandering about in the randomly generated dungeons.The way you fight also affects your moral affinity and what ending you get for the game, of which there are several. Be brutal and slash everything to pieces to get a "Blood" ending, or kill only blood monsters and keep your health up to get a "Light" ending. Overall, I found the game to be very enjoyable with high re-play value.I bought this game shortly after the release date and only decided to write this review now because I think people may be missing out on what is a very good, but unappreciated game.

Great Christmas present for my friend who loves the franchise so much. It was delivered earlier than expected as well which is always a bonus

I like all Silent Hill games so a bit biased I find the graphics nice and overall the game is good

Brought for my husband for his birthday so yet to give it to him so I can not rate the game itself but it was delivered fast and in great condition!

well what a terrible game! psvita are meant to be leading the way in handheld gaming, graphics wise and other..... you could really easily believe you are playing this game on a psp or even 3ds! terrible graphics horrible layout boring story line no interesting points about it in any way shape or form, id return it and get something more graphically challenging for the vita (which its intended for!) and get uncharted , assassins creed, the new wrc2013 is graphically amazing and really pushes what the vita is all about, whats with the 2d releases and pixely old styles? if we want that we will download an emulator and play the classics! concentrate on getting games out there that are more challenging and graphically much better!! love silent hill, hate it on vita what a waste in processing power! rant over hope this helps people who are looking to buy this game and think it will be like the other releases on other platforms.. you'd be wrong sooooo wrong :)

its just a dungeon crawler rpg, I would not suggest getting it for horror fans, since if it used a little more different set up it would have been better, and it feels like they just slapped the assets together to just shove it out ....

I was dying to get this game and when i got it i ripped it open and placed in in my vita straight away, first thing I noticed was the graphic quality of the game a bit more nintendo. The characters you choose from are more cute rather than hard worn like travis grady and alex shepherd.You choose from goth,rocker,book worm or jock then you receive a book which enables you to change your past,present and future and you launched into a nightmarish world of blood soaked dungeons which sounds good but really isn't as this game is set to a new perspective as more a gauntlet fighter than a over the shoulder gore fest. They carry on from 'downpour' that weapons break easily these include pipes,shotguns,and swords with mystical symbols you can dual wield smaller weapons with different hands and buttons,If your weapons are damaged you can repair them with a repair kit but as the game goes on they seem tougher to find. The enemies include homecoming favourite schisms,giant blobs of flesh,the good old nurses,and of course pyramid head makes an appearance,make sure your button mashing technique is up to scratch when you embark on this game as they come at you thick and fast.If you become injured there is always a shop on the level (run by the postman who gave you the book)for you to trade jewels and other trinkets for weapons and health amulets, a bit like resident evil 4 . The combat I found to be slow and sluggish and the karma metre delivering more brutal attacks on the dungeons inhabitants was sadly lacking as the gameplay is highly repetitive as you fight your way through yet another dungeon.I love silent hill but this is a poor substitute for the brilliance of the other 7 encounters it feels very cheap and lacks imagination if you a die hard fan like me you should avoid for fear of disappointment but if your curiosity gets too much for you I advise you rent it first.

S'il est loin de ce que peuvent attendre les fan d'un jeu estampillé Silent Hill en terme d'intélligence de scénario, Book of memories est un bon jeu du genre sans en atteindre les sommet.Ceci est entre autre due a des idées de gameplay originales pour le genre (qui d'ailleurs le rend plus sympathique en solo de mon point de vue). Et on y retrouve l'excellente esthétique visuelle et musicale de la série à défaut d'en retrouver l'ambiance.Par contre il n'atteindra jamais les sommet d'un Diablo car étant construit sous une toute autre logique.Bref ce n'est pas forcément le le jeu que l'on attendais, mais on passe de très bon moment dessus.
