i recently bought one of these to connect a smartphone to the internet tried 3 different phones and neither responded to the unit. help please?

MANUFACTURERS ANSWER: Thanks for asking! We are really sorry to see you've had this trouble. Compatibility with the ASIX AX88772 chipset we use in our adapter, and Ethernet functionality in general are entirely up to the manufacturer to add to their device. You may want to try putting the phones into airplane mode which may force the phone to use the Ethernet signal as opposed to the built in WiFi/Data. But, with respect, this isn't a guarantee. Is it normal for this adapter to get hot?

MANUFACTURERS REPLY: Thanks for asking! A small amount of heat may occur in the adapter, as with other electronics during usage. But, the adapter should never be too hot to touch.
