Tears for Fears are, without question, on of the best British bands... ever! Music trends come and go but having just purchased the blue ray version of the album, I have come to realise that time cannot erase genius. If I listen to other 80's music it sounds very dated and of its time but not The Hurting. In fact, Tears for Fears wrote, sang and produced some of the most poignant and thought evoking music of the 20th century. The appropriately named, The Hurting, demonstrates the pain and suffering, mostly of children, throughout. Something in their past perhaps? Roland Orzabal and Curtis Smith were indeed a music force to be reckoned with in the 80's but how many bands can still sound so good 30 odd years on?!! It is my opinion that they were always under rated, never quite recieving the glory that was greatly deserved for their many musical masterpieces. The sound track of the album, The Hurting, is a very great favourite of mine, bringing back some memories of my own. But rather than being a sad song, for me it has made me realise that I am not alone! 'Memories fade but the scars still linger'...how true that is, another great Tears for Fears lyric.

I was there! T4F's debut album appealed to the likes of me, an angst-ridden seventeen-year-old who'd been asked to leave the parental home. This is a review of the remastered CD with four extra tracks, expanding the original LP from its forty-one minutes to sixty-six. It also contains some interesting sleevenotes by Ian Cranna, as he concisely interviews the guys track by track. The original ten tracks are full of new-fangled (to me) sequencers and jangling guitars; the result is a dark psychology and a clinical instrumentation with few complex harmonies. It has the feel sometimes of the wards of a mental institution. What saves it all are the wonderful melodies of most songs. One wonders what might have been if someone like Trevor Horne had produced it. Full marks for the intelligent lyrics. Of course, `Mad World' is the best track, and `Watch Me Bleed' would merit five stars too if it had more harmony. The only duff track is the last - `Start of the Breakdown' - which simply goes nowhere with its incessant repetitiveness. The four extra tracks include a version of `Pale Shelter' that does have extra harmonies; an extended and therefore annoying version of `The Way You Are'; a remix of `Mad World' and an extended version of `Change'. Having undergone in this set of songs their own scream therapy, the duo went on to bigger and better things. But this was and remains for me a fantastic debut album.

One of my favourite albums from a timeless band with two great vocalists . As a teenager listening to this helped as I had an unhappy childhood and left home young. Their follow up album is just as good. Prisoner is my favourite track.

No need to review the music again here, but I've owned this LP on cassette and CD previously and waited 38 years to finally get the vinyl. It sounds great. Hearing things I never noticed before on a recording I must have listened to thousands of times. Helps that I have a grown up stereo system now that knocks my teenaged record player into a cocked hat. 😁

I have Tears For Fears in my collection but somehow had missed this album, glad to finally have it in my collection. Great album.

"The Hurting" ist das ursprünglisch anno 1983 erschienene absolut geniale Debutalbum von Tears For Fears alias Roland Orzabal und Curt Smith, die 1980 bereits mit der ehemaligen Schülerband Graduate das Album "Acting My Age" veröffentlichten. Roland Orzabal und Curt Smith stammen aus dem Städtchen Bath, Somerset im südwesten Englands und den Bandnamen entnahmen sie dem Buch eines amerikanischen Psychotherapeuten desssen Themen oftmals die Grundlage ihrer Texte bildeten. Das Album hat seinen ganz eigenen Sound und klingt insgesamt ein wenig düster und sehr melancholisch, was allerdigs auch nicht verwundert wenn man weiss das Roland Orzabal in den Texten von "The Hurting" seine nicht gerade leichte Kindheit verarbeitete. Der grosse internationale Durchbruch gelang mit der dritten Single "Mad World", die es immerhin auf Platz 3 in den UK und auf Platz 21 der deutschen Charts schaffte und auch "Pale Shelter" wurde im zweiten Anlauf (das gute Stück wurde eigentlich schon vor "The Hurting" im Jahre 1981 als Single veröffentlicht) im Zuge des Erfolges von "Mad World" ein Top 5-Hit in England und erreichte auch hier in Deutschland immerhin Platz 25. Auch "Suffer The Children" wurde bereits im Jahre 1981 als Single veröffentlicht und die vierte Single "Change" lief in den UK sehr erfolgreich (Platz 4 der Charts), konnte sich aber hierzulande leider nicht platzieren. "The Hurting" hat aber natürlich wesentlich mehr zu bieten als diese vier Singles! Das Album ist auch als Gesamtwerk durchaus mehr als höhrenswert und bietet feinsten gitarren- und synthieorientierten 80s-Pop! Erfreulicherweise bietet uns dieses Rerelease des UK-Nummer 1-Albums neben der Originaltracklist auch gleich noch vier feine Maxiversionen bzw Remixe in Form der Long Version von "Pale Shelter", der Extended Version des Non-Album-Tracks "The Way You Are", einer Single die im Jahre 1983 nach "Pale Shelter" erschienen ist und auch immerhin Top 30 in den UK war, dem World Remix von "Mad World" und, last but not least, der Extended Version von "Change", so daß sich folgende Tracklist ergibt: 1 The Hurting 4:19 2 Mad World 3:35 3 Pale Shelter 4:34 4 Ideas As Opiates 3:46 5 Memories Fade 5:06 6 Suffer The Children 3:52 7 Watch Me Bleed 4:17 8 Change 4:15 9 The Prisoner 2:56 10 Start Of The Breakdown 5:01 Bonus Tracks: 11 Pale Shelter (Long Version) 7:09 12 The Way You Are (Extended) 7:44 13 Mad World (World Remix) 3:43 14 Change (Extended Version) 6:00 Klanglisch gibt es nichts zu meckern und auch das kleine aber feine Booklet mit Linernotes von Ian Cranna und den Texten zu den Albumtracks kann sich durchaus sehen lassen. Absolut herausragend ist hier natürlich das Preis-Leistungsverhältniss, denn einen Preis von weniger als fünf Euronen (Stand 25. Aug. 2012) kann man natürlich durchaus als Schnäppchen bezeichnen und auch der reguläre Preis für dieses Release ist mit knapp sieben Euronen sicherlich nicht zu hoch angesetzt. Von mir gibt's eine uneingeschränkte Kaufempfehlung, denn Tears For Fears sollten in keiner gutsortierten 80er-Sammlung fehlen und hier bekommt man für kleines Geld ein grossartiges Album in wirklich ansprechender Qualität!
