This book provides a broad overview on the different aspects of solar energy, with a focus on photovoltaics, which is the technology that allows light energy to be converted into electric energy. Renewable energy sources have become increasingly popular in recent years, and solar is one of the most adaptable and attractive types โ from solar farms to support the National Grid to roof panels/tiles used for solar thermal heating systems, and small solar garden lights. Written by Delft University researchers, Solar Energy uniquely covers both the physics of photovoltaic (PV) cells and the design of PV systems for real-life applications, from a concise history of solar cells components and location issues of current systems. The book is designed to make this complicated subject accessible to all, and is packed with fascinating graphs and charts, as well as useful exercises to cement the topics covered in each chapter. Solar Energy outlines the fundamental principles of semiconductor solar cells, as well as PV technology: crystalline silicon solar cells, thin-film cells, PV modules, and third-generation concepts. There is also background on PV systems, from simple stand-alone to complex systems connected to the grid. This is an invaluable reference for physics students, researchers, industrial engineers and designers working in solar energy generation, as well those with a general interest in renewable energy. Review: Detailed but easy to follow - This book covers it all, from high level to all the equations involved, from tracking the sun to they layers of a solar cell, to efficiencies and energy storage. Way too much information for my brain but I was still able to learn at a higher level what's involved and how it all works. Well done to all the authors. Review: Excellent Intro To Solar Power - Good little book with some interesting wrinkles - For free so who can grumble , will give you an intro to the various types of solar and how it might be able to help you save money if you live in a sunny country, sadly not the UK and with tariff feed ins now reduced you won't save much installing solar now in the UK but this is a good intro so cannot realistically give it anything less than a full 5 stars!

Very detailed and all round great book.
The only thing that stops me from giving 5 stars is that I can't find answers for the exercises provided at the end of every topic so I can see where I have gone wrong. I've looked and looked and my apologies to the author if they are there but I don't believe that is the case. However I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to learn about PV.

Awesome.
Awesome book. A great examination of the subject from all points of view. Truly a must have. Arno Smets has done some a lot of research. Notably, he also provided a MOOC on the subject from Delft TU on edX.

Too focused on semiconductor physics
This book is mostly about semiconductor physics and very weak on solar PV design.

Excelent book just missing the solutions to the exercises
Excellent book to learn more deep about photovoltaic. In addition, at the end of each chapter you will find exercises to practice what you have learned. The only problem is I cannot find the answers to this exercises to know if my answers are right or not. If anybody knows where can I find the solutions sheet, please let me know.

Very comprehensive introduction to Solar Power
This book offers a well-written, easy to use text on electric power generation via use of solar panels. Information accessible herein will be helpful to craft electricians working with solar for the first time, to solar technicians perfecting understanding of solar technology, to college engineering students and field or design engineers in the solar power industry.
