Filler, Java & Skypiea
The four discs of the sixth volume of the `One Piece' anime includes another twenty-six episodes (131 to 156) of the series. The first thirteen episodes consist of filler but after that, the final thirteen return to the story with the Jaya arc and the beginning of the Skypiea. The first five episodes of filler are all pretty much standalone stories, each of which focuses one or two members of the crew. The first of these episodes is 'The First Patient! The Untold Story of the Rumble Ball!' sees Chopper left alone with Robin after the crew lands on a deserted island. The episode gives us a bit more on Chopper's background and sees him bond with the newest member of the crew. Next we have 'Uprising of the Navigator! For the Unyielding Dream!' that sees Nami try to get some sea charts drawn while everyone keeps annoying her. Then there is 'I Will Make it Bloom! Usopp, the Man, and the Eight-Foot Shell' that sees Usopp help a little girl fulfil her dream which is followed by 'The Fabled Pirate Hunter! Zoro, the Wandering Swordsman!' that flashes back to Zoro's past and his first meeting with Johnny and Yosaku. All of these standalone filler stories are quite light but are still very funny with Zoro's episode being my favourite of the four. The next three episodes are the Goat Island filler arc. This short arc sees the Straw Hats land on an island after being chased by Marines where they discover an old, sickly, man and his flock of goats. This is a relatively entertaining filler arc but is somewhat forgettable despite the old man, Zenny, being quite an interesting characters. The next five episodes are the Ruluka Island/Rainbow Mist arc. This is probably one of the better filler arcs of the series and sees the crew land at an island ruled by a corrupt mayor who is obsessed with a Rainbow Mist that leads to a ship graveyard outside of time. This is an entertaining arc with some good characters and some nice funny moments throughout even if the ending is a little disappointing.Episode 144 returns the show to canon with the Jaya arc. This arc is mostly setup for the Skypiea arc that follows but does have some interesting characters and some good moments in its own right making this arc my favourite part of this set . The arc introduces a lot of characters who become important to the series as a whole such as Blackbeard (the pirate Ace is looking for who was first mentioned during the Drum Island arc) and his eccentric crew as well as White Beard the world's most powerful pirate, the upper echelons of the Marines (including Fleet Admiral Sengoku) and two more of the Seven Warlords of the Sea (Donquixote Doflamingo and Bartholomew Kuma). The arc has many good moments but the best is probably Luffy's second encounter with Bellamy the Hyena (which is probably one of my favourite scenes from before the Water 7 arc) and the final part of the arc with the Knock Up Stream. Due to licensing agreements, this was the first arc of the series to be dubbed and while the performances are still generally good, some of the main characters voices do sound a little rough in places. The final four episodes of the set begin the Skypiea arc. Like a few of the series story arcs, this one is somewhat slow to start and doesn't really get going in these first four episodes. The episodes do have some entertaining moments (such as the crews encounter with the White Berets but these episodes are mostly setup and include some interesting exposition on the nature of the Sky Islands and the technology used there. The set includes both the Japanese and English versions of the series of course and mostly the English dub is as good as it has been throughout the series. Due to licensing issues however episode 144 onwards were the first episodes of the series to be dubbed and some of the voices of the regular characters are a little rough in places. Of the new characters introduced in this set, all the filler characters generally have good English voices, as are the canon characters. Of the canon characters the best are probably Robert McCollum's performance as Doflamingo and Cole Brown as Blackbeard with both voices being almost perfect for their roles. The set includes the usual cast commentaries and clean opening and closing sequences as extras.Overall this was another very strong set of episodes despite the filler in the first half and I would say that this sixth collection is well worth a full five stars.
