These keep for about 1-2 years before they get a little rancid, if you dont plan on using these right away, refrigerate them. However, I only put a handful of seeds in the tray feeder once a day. The birds usually eat all the seed - if seeds drop on the ground they are eaten by the birds. **Q: Do house sparrows like this seed ? I hope not** A: Generally, sparrows are not big fans of safflower seed. I mix this with black oil sunflower seed and sunflower hearts and chips, which brings grosbeaks, cardinals, house finches, purple finches, flickers, and woodpeckers. Squirrels are also repelled by safflower seed and leave this feeder alone. **Q: does it take a long time to be discovered? Nobody likes this stuff** A: The song birds like the safflower. I started using it because the blackbirds do not like it, and they were cleaning out my feeders quickly.
