SATA IDE to USB Adapter for 2.5" 3.5" HDD SSD, Hard Drive Reader 5Gbps

Worked really well for the PATA HDDs I had. The power cable that came with the item is a little short, so make sure you're able to reach an outlet. One was easy to set up and transferred the data relatively fast, but the other I was having issues with for the longest time, I tried messing with the jump pin settings, but it wouldn't show up on disk management. Apparently there are some drives that just aren't compatible with current PCs so I had to download TestDisk to find it. For reference, I had a Maxtor DiamondMax 21 and a DiamondMax VL 20. If you have to use this method to transfer data, it's a little slow and tedious.

Great tool to download hdd to ssd drives. Great tool to reduce the time. Not a big investment and very useful today. SSD drive prices went up on 1 TB and bigger, Should go down over time, shop download time (transfer speed) and size to help lower your cost. SSD ‘s are faster at any price point over HDD and use less power.

Works fine. Having said that, I could NOT get it to work at all with an old IDE 3.5 inch Windows XP WD HDD. After a couple of frustrating hours and subsequently reading some of the reviews here I noticed that several people had encountered the same difficulty. The solution was very simple and 2-fold: 1. Make sure that the HDD is fully connected and powered on BEFORE you plug in the USB cable to the receiving computer. Even so, it'll take minute or 2 before the drive actually shows up in your "My PC" window. Be patient - it'll show up. 2. Do NOT plug the USB cable into a USB-3 receptacle. All you'll get is "Please insert a disk into the USB drive" message. Instead, plug into a USB-2 receptacle and it'll be just fine. Once it shows up, then click on the USB Drive letter to open the drive. Again, be patient. It'll take a little bit but as long as the drive itself is fine, everything will show up and you can then do whatever you need to. In my case it was to make a copy of all the data that was on that old IDE HDD. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5, even though it works perfectly, because there was nothing in the sparce instructions that lead me to this solution for a non-working device. I had to search these comments to find out how to solve my problem. 5 stars for the device, minus 1 because of my frustration with getting it to work.

This adapter saved me during a tech emergency. It connected old hard drives quickly and transferred files without a hitch. Setup was simple, and the speed was impressive. I used it to recover party photos and costume designs from an old laptop. A must-have for tech-savvy organizers or anyone with legacy drives.

Lives to it’s price!

While the unit is easy to use and will accommodate a variety of hard drive types, it will not recover data from a dead drive as the description implies. Added 2-17-2023: Stopped working the second time I tried to use it, completely dead. Power supply checks out, so problem is in the "black box". Bummer, I'm two weeks past the 'return by' date. Amended 2-22-2023: Mea culpa, mea culpa. My second comment relates sort of to my first comment, that is unit can't read dead drives, but if a dead drive is connected the "pilot' light does not light up, leaving me to conclude the unit itself was kaput. Lesson learned, if light isn't on, take a breath and try a known good drive to confirm unit is still working.

Didn't know exaclty how I'd like this adapter when I ordered it. But I decided to try using an old PATA DVD Rom drive I had laying around on my Windows 11 laptop. Worked instantly after I plugged everything in and turned the toggle switch on the adapter. Tried a DVD with VLC and played no problems. I have a SATA Doc. But this adapter will allow me to check and verify what if any data I have on a bunch of IDE hard drives I have laying around. I was a little surprised I didn't need to bother to find an old IDE cable I had laying around. It will only attach to one device at a time. But it works. And for that I'm happy.

This turned out to be a small bottle of sunscreen with a label for a HDD adapter on the box. Scam. Now I have to drop this off as a return.
