I have used lead holders before, mainly for drafting, and lately I've had the desire to go back to that style as a writing utensil. The lead holders I've used have been the clutch variety, like the Staedtler Mars 780 or 788, Uni Lead Holder Pencil MH500, Sanford Turquoise 2022, Faber-Castell TK 9400. This holder does not have that same clutch mechanism, it uses a mechanical advance which you're probably familiar with from the 0.5mm and 0.7mm mechanical pencils.Honestly, I bought this set, mainly for the colored leads and considered the pencils a bonus. And a bonus they have been. They are mostly plastic, yet don't have a cheap feel to them, but I would prefer they had a little more weight. The tip, which appears to be metal is chromed plastic and the only externally observable part which appears to be metal which actually is metal is the pocket clip, and that is a very sturdy, substantial clip. The mechanism works very well, just as well as my 0.7mm Pentel mechanical pencil, with the advantage that the lead doesn't snap if you look at it wrong. The colored leads work well for a bit of drawing, but honestly, I use them mainly as a highlighter. The graphite lead is 2B and perfect for writing nice crisp black lines but still feeling "smooth" while writing. I have some HB lead of a couple different brands and compared to this (and other) 2B, the HB writes more smoothly, but is not nearly as dark or crisp.While the mechanism works well, I don't like having to press the button, then pressing the tip of the pencil into the desk (or paper, or my finger) to retract the lead. I prefer the clutch lead holders, mentioned above, for this reason. For my purpose of a "highlighter pencil", these work fantastic, yet others might like these as a primary pencil (and may hate the clutch-style pencils which I love). If I didn't have any clutch pencils, these would be pencils I'd be quite happy with, hence the 5-star rating.

These features have all the Lead that you need to use for your pencils for soooo long You would not worry about running out of the pencils or lead. This comes with a very pretty bag for storing your pencils in along with all the lead. I am happy with my purchase.

some of the pencil lead is broken

The pencils feel somewhat cheaply made and half of my refill packs came smashed and cracked. They came in a pencil pouch that I did not expect or seen in the photo's. They work as well as a mechanical pencil should and the built in sharpener is nice but you either have to use a 2nd to sharpen one or remove the lead to do so.
