The MILEPOST 2023: Alaska Travel Planner

Great informative Book
This is a must have for anyone traveling to Alaska from the lower 48. Best $40 I ever spent. This book is updated every year but would be usable for many years because there is not much changes from year to year. So informative. My brother used to live there and he couldn't believe how much he didn't know about some areas he was so familiar with. Definitely need to buy this whether its your 1st time or 20th time to go!

North to Alaska...
Alaska and the Canadian Northwest are the journey of a lifetime for the enterprising traveler. That said, they are also far less developed in the way of services than what travelers may be used in the lower 48 states or along the Trans-Canadian Highway. Plan ahead for best results.Alaska and Northwest Canada offer the opportunity to experience the world as it was before urbanization. Wild animals still roam a landscape covered with forests, streams, lakes, mountains, tundra, and glaciers. It is possible to spends hours, days or weeks in the wild, with minimal contact with other humans. There are no end of outdoor adventures involving fantastic hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, snow machining, dog sledding, fishing and hunting. Lots of species like bald eagles, bears, and wolves that are endangered in the lower 48 are plentiful in Alaska. There is also less tourist infrastructure than you typically find in the lower 48 states. You'll want the Milepost to find scarce gas stations, restaurants, stores and places to sleep with a roof over your head. What there is fills up quickly, especially in summer. Plan ahead to ensure a positive experience. The Milepost is that planning resource that most visitors and even locals need. The 2023 version of "The Milepost" is the 75th edition, proof of its utility, whether you're arriving by road, sea or air. The Milepost offers a mile-by-mile travelogue, updated annually, for the main roads, along with maps, diagrams of some key towns, photographs and advertisements for attractions, accommodations, and other travel facilities. It includes small delights that might not make it into other guidebooks, like scenic overlooks of glaciers, or places to book a fishing trip. It includes the basics for the Alaska Marine Ferry System, still a great way to see Southeast Alaska from the water and take your vehicle with you. And this book includes access to a digital version. Very highly recommended.

Excellent planner, but digital version is disappointing
This guide is an invaluable tool for planning a trip to Alaska or the western provinces and territories of Canada. It contains extensive and very detailed information about travel conditions, amenities and attractions. Unfortunately, it's not so useful as a travel companion and guide, at least not for me. The bound version is quite large, which makes it great for planning and reference, but not so much for use while on the road. I hoped the digital version that is available to anyone who purchases the print version would fill that purpose. I hoped it would be a PDF or e-book that I could have on my travel laptop. Unfortunately, it's only available as an app for a smartphone or tablet. As I only have a smartphone, the version that I have is so small as to be virtually unusable. I wasn't able to find much info about the digital version prior to purchase - only that one was available. Even after my purchase, it was difficult to find instructions for accessing it. Had I known the format of the digital version in advance, I still would have purchased the print book, but if there was a Kindle version, I would have preferred that, as it would have served both functions - planning and on-the-road guide.

Excellent information content
This book has been around for quite a while, and contains a massive amount of information to help you plan your next trip through Canada to Alaska and back. This is the third that I have owned, and I would buy it again. However… I would prefer a spiral bound version — easier to keep your place as you travel.

Best purchase I made for planning our trip, BC to Northwest Territories.
We purchased the Milepost, initially just for information for our travel from Kamloops BC, to Tuktoyaktuk in NWT. However, this book served not only as an informative travel book, but provided us with hours of entertainment. We started following the mile posts after Whitehorse as we started the Klondike Loop. Time flew on long drives as my husband and I read out details to each other along the journey (with no cell service). We would pick a random city at times, within the book, and learn a little something about places we were not even travelling to. We even changed some travel plans during our journey, to complete the Klondike Route after reading through it. This book also covers the major routes of BC and Alberta, so a great reference for us travelling within our own provinces. My only regret, is that I didn’t spend much time reading the book before we left on our travels, I only focused on the Dempster Highway drive! But good news, we can read it post by post on our way home, when we leave Dawson City, Yukon, tomorrow! The entertainment continues :)

Great Planner
The traveller planner is great, very detailed and informative. Only issues is print is very small and bit pricey. Planning trip for next year so real asset but not as useful on road due to very small print.

Used the Milepost for our 2019 Alaska trip and absolutely a most!
Used the Milepost for our 2019 Alaska trip. Heading back this year to Alaska and an essential necessity for our trip will be our new Milepost. We have complete confidence the 2023 will be just as valuable.
