Insanely Great
This movie reminds one of Romeo and Juliet, two star-crossed young lovers who would rather die than be apart. Elizabeth Taylor gives a great performance and it's surprising she wasn't nominated for any acting awards. She's also stunningly beautiful in this film and I couldn't take my eyes off her. Who wouldn't go to extremes to be with her? Staying with Shelly Winters would have been a slow death. I'd prefer the gas chamber. Too bad George didn't come up with a more clever scheme. Why did Dreiser call his book An American Tragedy? Because in America, we long for riches, fame, movie stars? Yep, that's a dream many have. What length would you go to get it?

The wages ..of SIN ..
It was about 20 something years ago ..that I saw this CLASSIC film on T#M network. At the time I had never heard of it..though I was very familiar with it's stars. Elizabeth Taylor one of the worlds most beautiful motion picture stars..Jet setter's , jewelry maven's and AIDS activist . Montgomery Clift ..so handsome but shy actor and of course actress Shelley Winters .. who has appeared in many a movie. To spare every one about the detail's of their live's. Lets just talk about the movie.. Black and White worked best..the story was exceptional and the director did a splendid job the great ..George Stevens. Miss Taylor was the center figure in the film ..and Miss Winters ..had sloppy seconds. Don't feel sorry for either lady..both of these ladies have won 2 Academy awards each..! Mr. Clift who died in 1966 at the age of 45 years old from a heart attack.. was regarded as an outstanding "Method actor" from his generation.. The story of how he and and Shelley Winters character played around at work. Should be a learning tool..too NEVER get romantically involved with co-worker's.. This can create all forms of havoc and look what happened if he had never been intimate with her..? He could have dumped her and moved on to become a very successful individual in his uncles company and married Elizabeth Taylor's character.. Then again this is a movie and I am certain that many people have had these issues..without the fear of "Black-mail" and going to prison for murder..? But then again...you never know. The man who played his attorney was a well respected character actor by the name of Fred Clark.. If you watch enough of these films..you will see him in them.. Raymond Burr played the District attorney..long before we all knew him as "Perry Mason".. I'm quite sure many of a man would have dreamed up a scheme such as this to avoid the outcome of being rushed into a "shot-gun" wedding..? Just remember gentlemen..use common sense to avoid these kinds of situations ..and you too shall be fine..!

Charlie Chaplin was right it is the best American film of all time
This film makes us identify with the lead character's struggles to make a better life, being raised by itinerant street preachers, then working in a factory and becoming involved with a whining, clinging Shelley Winters, before he falls in love with Elizabeth Taylor, who accepts and loves him despite his poor origins and makes her industrialist family accept him. His dreams are shattered when the first girl then threatens to tell everyone he got her pregnant unless he marries her. He takes her out in a row boat he rented using a false name, having made arrangements that would allow him to escape unnoticed after capsizing the boat. The novel relates his thoughts and he has a change of heart feeling sorry for what he had planned, but she panics and stands up in the boat, causing him to reach for her, just before she falls overboard. The novel makes it clear that he did not push her and did nothing to make her fall, while the film cannot convey what he was thinking except by implication, but he did not try to save her once she was in the water. This is Theodore Dreiser's repeated theme of an normal person getting into a perilous situation through seemingly innocuous steps: as the false name and measures that he took to enable him to escape now doom him, as no one will ever believe it could have been an accident. The scene where Elizabeth Taylor says goodbye to him in prison before his execution is acted and directed so perfectly, it may be the best scene on film. No film can be like a novel; but, this is an extraordinary film in its own right. The direction and the acting throughout are first-rate, and the beautiful musical score still haunts me. Charlie Chaplin was right, this may have been the best movie of all time. Montgomery Clift is exactly right for the male lead, Shelley Winters makes it easy to understand why someone might want to kill her, and Elizabeth Taylor at age 17 also makes it easy to understand why someone might want to kill Shelley Winters..

They don't make them like this any more!
Having watched this film several times I know it is brilliant and bought this one as a Christmas present - yes, I know I'm early! The film boasts a great script about Montgomery Clift, the poor relation of a wealthy family, getting his girlfriend Shelley Winters pregnant only to realise that he is in love with Elizabeth Taylor and she with him. This is in the 1950s when couples generally got married when there was a child on the way but what if you don't want to? What are your options? Excellent cast, great director, a classic which stands the test of time.I haven't opened the box but must say I'm concerned about the rattling sound it makes and only hope the contents are sound when opened. I am wondering whether I should return it or not ...

A Crime of passion ?
a great comment on class differences .love and lust and crimes of passion by George stevens! ! It’s the best performance Montgomery Clift could muster and Elizabeth Taylor shines in a serious dramatic role ! It’s a heartbreaking love story and very grey and unpredictable! The kind Hollywood stopped making decades ago! The blAck and white photography is simply stunning and so is production design and rest of cast ! It’s the way the script deals with the crime of passion that is so unique as you are not sure what really happened and it makes the drama totally heart wrenching and sublime .

Great film But vastly over priced
Great classic film , good story and great acting from Monty Clift and Liz Taylor, best of friends in real life.Clift was such a great actor , not over hyped like James Dean but a true genius, such a shame his accident impacted his older years.I got this imported like the one shown from Australia.Only down side is £30 for a blu ray, the slip case is just paper thin ,no info etc, if u have region free you would be better off buying the American release, looks great , packaging and from a newer 4k scan.

Superb!
Superb adaptation of the classic novel "An American Tragedy" with uniformally excellent performances from all concerned. An excellent script, coupled with splendid direction from William Wyler, wonderful photography and a lush and heart-felt score, result in a memorable and moving film which has been justifiably celebrated. During the making of the movie Elizabeth Taylor fell head over heels for Montgomery Clift - in one of his finest roles - but he of course was only able to offer her friendship - something which continued for most of his tragically short life. This present dvd displays a solid transfer and although not a restored print it certainly does the film justice and the extras and programme notes are also of great interest. Highly recommended.

Classic melodrama - a jolly good yarn
Features Liz Taylor when she was luminous and Montgomery Clift when he was straight!Shelley Winters dulls down to play the annoying, clingy girlfriend from hell....... who wouldn't want to drown her?Classic melodrama... a bit stilted by today's standards but a jolly good yarn.
