How do the light-up drum sticks work?

With every contact with the drum head, the stick changes color. We used these for a VBS glow party, and they were a big hit with the kids. They are balanced differently than traditional sticks, but are comfortable enough to play and produced good sound with an electronic drum set (mesh heads).
