Slightly Dull And Occasionally Offensive Swedish Melodrama
This is an odd film. Of course, we have to remember that it dates from the early 1970's, so it's going to reflect the ideas, values, and perceptions of that time. In other words, it's fairly hard to appreciate this movie from the perspective of today.Anyway, first things first. If you're wondering if this is a sexy film to watch.... well, frankly, it's not. I definitely wouldn't call this an erotic form of entertainment. What it really is is the story of a young woman who leaves a rural Swedish village in order to visit her sister in the big city, for a very long weekend. What unfolds from this basic plot is more or less a melodrama about relationships, going out to discos, meeting members of the opposite sex, and various tensions and conflicts. It is true that you get an occasional glimpse of beautiful Swedish actress, Kristina Lindberg, without clothes on. But these are not crude or vulgar images -- they are essentially just quick flashes of her stepping out of the bath, or sitting, in profile, on a bed. There is nothing pornographic about it.In fact, the majority of the film actually deals with the older sister, and her boyfriend who hangs around the apartment all the time. These two are the primary performers in the movie. You get to see them making dinner, smoking a hookah, dancing, taking a bath, walking all around the city, kissing in bed, and drinking and laughing. Frankly, these scenes become pretty dull after a while. (But i will say that the guy definitely has one of the coolest coats I have seen in a long time.) In between these lengthy episodes, you occasionally see Kristina Lindberg sleeping, ice skating, drinking coffee, and shopping. And that's pretty much the whole movie -- just melodrama, with some scenes of making out, and various arguments. Here is a warning, though: there ARE brief episodes of sexual violence, and scenes that verge on attempted rape. This content will probably be very offensive to most viewers. I certainly found it to be disturbing, upsetting, and really hard to watch. In fact, I had to fast-forward through most of it, because it makes for truly uncomfortable viewing.I guess, way back in 1971, this was somehow considered to be acceptable content. The reason I say this is that there are plenty of other movies, dating from the 60's and 70's, that also have sexual violence in them. It's clearly a reflection of a heavily sexist, and sexually biased, era in history.Anyway, this movie obviously did not make for great viewing. I will briefly say that it was slightly enjoyable to see Sweden in the early 70's. And Kristina Lindberg is certainly a lovely lady on screen. But all in all, the film veered from tedium all the way to really unpleasant scenes of sexual violence. And with that being said, I definitely don't have any interest in seeing this movie again.
