South African Approved!
I am a South African who has lived in the States for about 4 years now. The one thing I missed most about home was biltong! Not any more! Having grown up on a farm with a dad who consistently made biltong as a hobby, I did not have high expectations of this kit. I couldn't have been more wrong. This is almost like eating my dads home-made biltong! 100% worth it!

Easy to make and good flavor!
I purchased this for my partner who just moved back to the US after a year in South Afrcia. One of the things he misses from living in SA is biltong, and it is hard to find anything close to it here. The kit had everything we needed, and the instructions were super easy to follow. The results, very good! The biltong is a bit more like what they call snap sticks, but tasty. We will definitely be using this product again!

Buy ready made
If you like beef jerky, buy beef jerky. Biltong has an odd flavour, probably due to the coriander. The kit could use more seasoning,

Not buying it again.
Not impressed, vinegar packets had things in them! Not using that. I think it is false advertising.

Easy to use
The biltong making kit was well packaged and each item within had its purpose. The kit came with five wooden short skewers, a pack of dried biltong spice powder mix, two sachets of vinegar, a press seal bag for marinating purposes and an optional small sachet of chilli flakes if you like your biltong to have a punch of heat. The kit also came with a small pamphlet on Sandy Leaf Farm Ltd and of course, it came with an instruction booklet. The instructions are clear and concise, using a step by step method to follow. Each part of the kit was of use to make the biltong. Of course, the meat used has to be bought separately but that was an easy task as the instruction booklet made it clear which type/cuts of meat would be ideal to use. Around 500grams of meat needs to be used for the kit. I used lean cuts of beef steak from a halal butcher with minimal fat on them. As instructed, I cut the meat into the required size strips, trimming off any fat I came across. The strips were coated with the biltong spice, vinegar and the chilli flakes. The well coated meat strips were put in the bag and then the fridge to marinate. I left them overnight and got back to put them in the oven roughly 24 hours later, that the one and only way I deviated from the instructions. The meat strips were skewered on to the skewers before I strung them up to my oven grill tray. My fan oven's minimum heat was 80C, so I used that to dry out the strung out strips, a tray placed below to catch any drips. For my biltong to fully dry out, it took around three and a half hours. I made sure that the steam building up inside was let out regularly and it was fascinating to see the changes occur. Unfortunately, I couldn't take a single picture of my finished biltong. By the time the strips had cooled down, the amount I made seemed to have vanished into thin air, having gone into family lunch bags and hungry mouths. The taste was good, the spices well balanced. Even with the optional chilli flakes added, it wasn't of a high spice heat to my palate but the biltong did taste delicious all the same and wasn't too salty or vinegary. Would I recommend the kit? Yes, I would. I don't think I have anything to improve upon from the kit itself. It lived up to its promise of making delicious biltong. If I had any gripe and it is very minor - it is that the kit would only let me make it the once as the ingredients inside were for a single go. With how fast the biltong I made got gobbled up, I regret not baing able to make another batch so I can hoard it from the family (only not really, as I would gladly share it with them again).

Perfect as a stocking filler gift
I purchased this for my husband as a gift last year he was pleased and the meat came out perfectly better than expected, easy to use with instructions and the ingredients required minus the meat which you can purchase once ready to prepare it takes a while but worth the wait….

I can never go back to shop bought again!
I bought this kit on a whim as I really like biltong but I don’t like the cost to buy it in the shops so I thought I’d give making it myself a bash. It’s really easy to do - everything you need ( except the beef of course) is contained in the kit. The hardest part is waiting to eat it. I used silverside beef which my butcher trimmed of fat and then sliced into strips for me so zero effort on my part other than chucking into the bag with the marinade and finally placing the meat in the oven. Although the skewer idea worked fine, it was a bit fiddly hanging them down through the grill so next time - and there will definitely be a next time ! I will be investing in a set of stainless steel meat hooks to hang from the underside of the grill again to make it easier to clean up afterwards.By my reckoning, by doing it yourself, you are saving at least 50% on the shop bought version so well done to this company for bringing this to the market.

Cheap and nice stocking filler
Bought as a present (who has used and said it was quite nice). More of an unusual stocking filler for the foodie who has everything! Very affordable but then again it is only a few herbs and spices so shouldn’t be too expensive! Would probably buy again!
