What was I waiting for?
The media could not be loaded. Every week I found myself going to Sonic to get their yummy ice. It was a fight to get it home in one piece and refrozen in my freezer without it turning into a solid chunk of ice! Once summer hit, I knew it was going to be harder so I looked into investing to my own "sonic ice maker" and found this one. I debated about getting the water attachment, but decided since I got it on sale, I'd do myself a favor and get it. If you are questioning getting the water attachment, do it!! I'm so thankful I got the attachment. Our family goes through so much ice a day that I'm filling the water attachment several times a week. Now here is my only complaint about the water attachment - it's really hard to hold/handle to fill the water in the container. For me, it's a two person job as I use my Zero Water Filter Container to fill the water tank - one to hold the water tank and one to push the nozzle of the water filter container. Without that side container, you would have to pull the ice basket out and fill the water from underneath, which can be messy as some ice does slip through the holes of the ice basket. So if you are on the fence, get it!!Cons - my sidetank lid came to me scratched as well as the lid of the ice maker. It bothered me when I first bought it, but to send it back over scratches wasn't worth the hassle so I kept it. I see it now and still wish I sent it back and had it fixed, but the reality is I'm sure it would have gotten scratched sooner or later. The feet of the ice maker are sharp and scratched up the counter where I initially had the ice maker. I wish it wasn't so sharp and I hadn't ruined my brand new counters. While the machine is supposed to have a humming noise when the ice makes, sometimes it gets loud. But in apartment living where everything is so condensed and open, you are going to hear everything. The noise is louder than my fridge (everyone said the noise wasn't louder than a fridge) and sometimes bothers me with its noise.I wish there was a place to put the ice scooper. Right now it sits on the inside/top of the ice, but sometimes it gets burried in the new ice. If the ice scooper had a hole in it, I could hang it on the outside of the ice maker.Lastly people have asked if the inside of the ice area is a freezer. While it's cold on the inside where the ice is made, it all sits together and keeps the area cold. As it melts, it goes through the basket and recycles the water to make new ice.I believe that's everything about this amazing ice maker. GET THE SIDE TANK and save yourself the headache!

So unbelievably loud!
The media could not be loaded. This ice maker worked beautifully for several days and then suddenly started making this horrendous noise a few times a day. It sounds like we are torturing a baby t-Rex in our kitchen! It lasts for 10-15 minutes and then goes back to making ice. When this sound is happening it shows “defrosting” on the panel but this cannot be the case every time as it has done it twice immediately upon plugging it back in when it was off overnight. The ice is wonderful and it doesn’t seem to affect the function…just don’t plan to have any conversations or phone calls anywhere in your house when this starts happening!UPDATE: a few days after my initial review this ice maker started making a loud banging noise that was deafening. It locked up completely and something broke inside making another horrendous noise. Then ALL the water in it ran out from underneath all over my kitchen. This item is a complete waste of money and after seeing so many other reviews of the same type I think GE should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to sell this item. It should be removed from Amazon's list of recommended items.

A great counter ice machine for the nugget ice lovers.
I previously had the original Opal Nugget Ice Maker (now called 2.0) before it was bought by GE. It worked great, for the most part, but the suction motor finally gave out. I was going to get the new version but this model was on sale so I decided to give it a shot.So far, this machine has worked much smoother than my old one. I'm able to leave it on all the time. I don't have to dump ice into freezer bags, I just leave it running and as my ice bucket runs low, it's refilled as long as I keep it full of water. Which is a good thing because dumping the ice bucket on this one is not as easy as the other model. I wouldn't say it's hard, it's just not as easy.As the machine is always running or in standby mode waiting for me to fill it or open the lid, I'm pleased that the noise level is low. It's a background white noise that is not intrusive. Previous model would make a ton of noise until it was warmed up. This model is definitely quieter.I also like that it tells me and reminds me when I need to clean it. The process is easy and I can clean and sanitize quickly.I live in an area with incredibly hard water so I only use distilled water to make ice. Mixed with bottled water, occasionally we've noticed a slight flavor to the ice that we didn't have before. It's not enough to prevent me from using it (and I am a water snob - yes, I have a preferred brand of water that I drink and other brands that I avoid because of how they taste). I'm hopeful it's because the machine is new and that it will go away as time goes on.Overall, this machine is a great way to get our beloved nugget ice for a little less money. I highly recommend it.
