Superb Intermediate Survey of Pennsylvania and Northeast trees
This small book is not so much for the beginner, nor is it for the expert: it is for an individual with an intermediate knowledge of the trees of the mid-Atlantic. Mr. Fergus gives essay-like descriptions of various and prominent trees, and specifically, I enjoyed his focus on the structure and height of mature specimens. This is an excellent book to accompany a more detailed, scientific listing, and not really a field guide but more so where one can learn and attempt to understand each individual species. Though he does point out methods of identification, this is not principally why one would read this book. If you would, then, more so a book for tree lovers as opposed to tree identifiers.
