AMAZING!!!
this headset is just incredible. the set up was confusing at first but don't let that deteriorate you from buying this. it comes with instruction (pics in it really help, made it much easier to plug in) that show you step by step to plug in, set up settings and what you need in order to make use of its full potential. the complaint about there being a hissing is present but that is just electricity running. also don't turn on the expander because it will really be noticeable and annoying. there is a sticker on the cable that says the expander will interfere with the dss. trust me it does. so i just leave it off. the surround sound really does work. i find myself flinching when i have the bass and volume pretty high whenever some one tries to snipe me or whenever there is a helicopter flying overhead i duck. i actually heard a heli and could not tell if it was outside or not. i removed the headset and heard nothing. i put them back on and still could not confirm it. i took them off again and heard nothing again. this headset is bad ass. i also use them for watching/listening to music and videos all the time. im doing it right now. now i will address the supposed problem of one of the ear cups breaking off upon opening the package. do not twist these like they are worth $20. i don't know, i think this is just me but, i feel like when i twist these i also feel that I'm going to break them. the angle that they twist at feels weird. but then i am always careful with these because i got them for $90 and they feel $150. to recap what i just said, don't twist these the way you want. twist them the way the headset wants. next, there is plenty of cable to go across any room. this cable is massive in length. my room is only a 10*12 and my set-up only requires i unwrap only a couple feet. the rest is wrapped up in a velcro strap that it comes with. the dss i have to say does make a slight but noticeable difference in the sound quality. if you are a casual user, what are you doing using this, this is for the hard working people who deserve to use this. they will notice the difference. but in all seriousness if you are not accustomed to using equipment like this you will be stunned by the performance of the headset alone. when using the dss you might not notice its on. as a fair warning, do not use the bass on the cable and the dss as it will provide to much bass even when the volume is on at a comfortable level. next to talk about the mic. the mic is actually better than i had expected. my friends have told me i needed a headset and i got these and they were stunned about the quality of my voice. there is a chat boost function that is built in so when the game volume (excessive explosions, constant engines reving up, guns firing) is up, so are your friends voices. i have to say it really does work if...the bass is not up all the way from both the expander and the dss and the volume is not all the way up either. or else the headset just rattles your brain. but no one uses it like that all the time so that i guarantee will not be a problem. the mic boom itself does twist and bend and will stay in place. if i were making this headset i would have made it so that way the mic boom can come off. but it doesn't. i thought it wouldn't be a problem but in the long run the mic boom gets kind of cumbersome. if you twist it up (parallel to the head band) and take it off then the cup won't be able to rest up against the other cup. the mic boom has to be out in order for it to be resting comfortably on itself. one thing i also thought would be nice would be a little foam to cover the mic so that way you don't have to hear every little wisp from your mouth or nose or window or fan. i found a way around the wisp from your nose. twist it inwards towards your face and bring the mic in closer to your face and you won't hear your own breathing. the ear cups are very very comfortable. they are indeed over-sized, plenty of mesh padding and noise canceling. however...if you wear glasses then you might be disappointed because because for me they hurt my ears after a couple hours of gaming. it gets so bad that i have to remove one or the other and settle. then my ears will hurt for a day or two afterwards. but i you don't wear glasses then these will definitely be extremely comfortable. also if your glasses are wider than your head (not resting right up against your skull) then your glasses will lift the cups and let in just a little outside noise. you won't notice until after a few hours and you remove your glasses and put the headset on. (to me it feels like a major difference but i still love these). just as a little tip, you must use the digital optical output cable in order to use the chat function. i thought that with just an hdmi cable i wouldn't have to worry about that but you have to use it to use the mic. another tip is when you use the headset on a computer you only need the usb to hear, you dont need the 3.5 jack to hear. remember that it is usb powered. if you plan on using this with a music player then you have to plug this into a usb port and the 3.5 jack into the music player. once you receive this in the mail you will throw away all doubt about this being flimsy and be sure it is sturdy. oh and one more thing. the headband has a cushion on top and bottom and the extension for the big-headed is metal and plastic. metal on top and black plastic on bottom. i am confident about the rigidness of this item %100. i know that was long but i wanted to cover everything so you can make an informed decision. happy shopping!!!

For PS3 Awsome, for PC.... What a Pain!!
I have had the product for a few days now, and overall am quite satisfied with amount of cabling supplied with the unit, and the preset sound quality of the headphones for the PS3. Only thing that is adjustable is the volume, mic volume, and Bass... Very bright and clear sound, can here so many details in the game, VERY easy to setup, and definitely enough lentgh with supplied cords to be able to sit 10" or more away from screen. Headphones have seperate controls, which are great so you are not running back to the little external soundcard. No tweaking needed for the PS3, just work exactly as hoped. Just FYI, I have had my experience with studio quality headphones... Pioneers, Sony's etc... These are super colored headphones, and they are extremely comfortable, I forget I had them on. They feel cheap, but I think that comes with the sacrifice of the weight. As far as the PC side goes. I have it connected to a 64 bit Win7 machine. I am using a laptop with NO spdif interface so I bought the corresponding USB to optical breakout from Turtle Beach called the Micro II. I will explain that in another review. Problem is, when you connect the DSS for power, then you connect the Micro II, there are 3 devices for audio. The software for the micro 2 works, but reports that the Micro II isn't connected due to the connected DSS. You have to go into you device manager, and remove the drivers for the USB headset which are for the DSS. Unplug the Micro II, and insert again.. Software will finally report 1 micro II installed. from this point, IF you are watching a bluray, or want to take advantage of the 5.1/7.1 you have to go to control panel/sound, and select the optical portion of the Micro II. If you just want to listen to music from Win Media Player, you have to select Speakers in the list of audio devices :o !!! """"Super important, you have to configure the audio for the Micro II to be in 5.1/7.1, so you'll have to click the "configure" tab on the audio device menu panel. So, all in all it was not worth the hassle to even try to get the 5.1 to work off the laptop because the PLII works just as well. Sound quality improved marginally better with Dolby Digital, but not enough for me to go through the hassle of this everytime I want to watch a movie.. All in all, it is a great setup, sounds great, you can hear great detail of things, and crank it without irrating poeple in the house or where ever, although the muffs allow sound to escape, it could irritate people in the immediate area.

Not worth the price. Only sublte gains in sound quality
I currently have P11's and wanted something with surround sound. I came across this deal for the DPX21 and decided to give it a go. Right out of the box there are a LOT of cables to hook up. Doesn't take long but having all those wires around is kind of a pain. Once I got everything hooked up, played some MW3 to test them out. Immediately I was disappointed with the sound quality of these as the surround sound makes the overall loudness weaker. I played around with the settings and tinkered with all the fancy switches trying to find a good sound but couldn't. At best, with the sound cranked up, you can hear more subtle noises however the DSS processor makes them sound very weak, forcing you to up the volume. And by upping the volume, the in game sounds might be better but then other sounds like chat or whatever get grossly distorted even after using the individual controls to customize the sound. Another big issue with these is that you have the DSS control box as well as the control box for the headsets. I don't understand why TB can't make ONE unit to control both boxes. Is it really that hard? So bi fiddling with one of the controls, you then have to make adjustments on the other control to compensate which gets really irritating after awhile. I used the headphones for about 2 hours or so and wasn't impressed with them by any means. I'm guessing that TB's next line of headphones will have the DSS/DSS2 control incorporated in them but, currently, the DSS module is just an add on that doesn't really make that great an improvement in the sound. What you'll get with these is a sacrifice in that you'll gain some surround sound effects however lose overall sound quality as a result. To be honest, the P11's, despite being amplified stereo, sound a lot better than these do. Sound is crisper and you're still able to pick out things like footsteps, reloading, etc. The simple fact that TB is repackaging some of their current headphones with this DSS module included shows how lazy they've become with their product line. Seeing as how these are 1/3 off retail pricing leads me to believe that either no one wants this crap or TB will be pushing out a new line of headphones soon. You can buy the DSS2 module separately however that's another $80 for something with so so quality. As of now, I've returned these headphones and will stick with my P11's for the time being. Hopefully TB does something to their headphone line up and actually offer up some decent headphones or it'll be time to try out some Tritons or some other brand instead of TB.

It is a decent gaming headset, but far from the best
Turtle Beach is well known for its gaming headsets, and if you'd ask the casual gamer, they'd probably be one of the first names that come to mind when asked about headsets-- along with Astro and Tritton. The DPX21 is Turtle Beach's answer to the other companies' lower budget packages that come included with their own surround sound synthesizers, in this case the DPX21 is just the 80usd PX21 with 80usd DSS. As far as this headset's impact on your gaming experience (particularly with fps games and the ability to hear your surroundings) it makes a considerable difference to people who havn't been spoiled off other headsets already. Over a normal tv's speakers, this headset will immerse you within the game, allowing you to nearly pinpoint enemies around you and provide a much more conducive environment to do well in. The bass of the headset makes explosions feel immersive and powerful, and the DSS does a very good job at converting the 5.1 audio of the ps3 into a synthesized surround sound for these pair of stereo earphones. For the price that amazon usually sells this package at, it's a pretty decent deal. That's about all I can say that's good about this headset however. With normal use I began to feel my ears ache after decent gaming spans of 1-2 hours straight. My head is average at around 23.5 inches in circumference, but the clamping feeling I get with these on makes my ears get squished over time. If the design was circumaural and completely surrounded your ears, the comfort level of these cans would be top notch, but as it stands I really can't recommend this for someone with a good-sized head on them, as I found myself continuously adjusting them to make them feel better on my tortured ears. The comfort level was the major reason I had to eventually get rid of these for a better option. The sound quality is something that's very important for a headset/earphones for gaming and listening to music, and while I can say the turtle beaches excel in bass reproduction (they even have a very efficient bass boost on the in-line amplifier when connected to the DSS to boost the bass without causing distortion, which is very nice) they do not excel in mids and highs. Just like almost every other headset from the major gaming companies, these things are just plain dark and muddy, the trebles are not crisp and bright at all, while the mids just fail to stand out often because the bass reproduction drowns them out. Voices are not clear and distinguished, rather they're muddy and feel like they're meddled in with the rest of the music into one big pile of tones, instead of being separated and true to its own element within the larger symphony of a song. This doesn't give the DPX21 a very broad and airy sound for music and gaming that's a recurring theme for higher priced cans. As far as gaming, the DSS does a very good job of giving you a spatial representation while gaming, but gaming is as far as I would use it for. The DSS is probably the best part about this package, but I really can't recommend the headset itself. The surround sound element is there, but it could be better. Transitions aren't smooth and natural at all because the earphones themselves do not provide great soundstage, so sometimes it's hard to make out where exactly an enemy is in relation to your position while gaming. Turtle Beach has made some great products like the HPX, but the DPX21 is just a decent processor paired with a below-par headset-- which also gives off a constant static sound when plugged in. I would only get the DPX21 if it were priced low enough-- say 100usd, but no higher, and try it out. There are however considerably better options in gaming headsets though, namely good standalone earphones like the Sennheiser 595 or Audio Technica AD700s with the astro mixamp and a detachable boom mic. Both of which give considerably better audio and soundstage (which helps create an immersive surround sound environment when gaming). I use the audio technica ad700s with astro mixamp, and I can say from personal experience that the surround sound experience you get with this combo is in a league of its own compared to the DPX21. A combo like that will run you around 220usd, but it is yet slightly cheaper and way better than the overpriced bundles that astro provides. The bottom line is these are worth a try when the price is low and you're an average gamer looking for a decent upgrade from your tv's default stereo audio, but be weary of these if you're looking into a really nice gaming headset and want the best possible surround sound experience possible.

Won't last!!!
I am changing my review now, with 20/20 hindsight, do not buy these headphones. I made a rave review when I first received these-I enjoyed them very much. Before I purchased the headset I read that people turtle beaches broke and the customer service was horrible. I proceeded to buy them anyways because I figured people just didn't take as good of care of them as they should, and that I would. The headset appeared much more affordable than those of comparable quality. Doesn't feel completely durable to begin with. The sound and direction was good, not great, some fuzz in the background. After about an hour of wearing them and removing them my ears would be sore at the top, still not a huge deal. The last straw was when I was using these headphones in the middle of a game, and still working then took them off and set them down in a normal careful way to use the bathroom. Upon returning and putting them back on no sound came out. I have tried many things with them in the last month they have been broken and the mic still works but the speakers make zero sound. After 10 months they have broken and now I have a $130 useless piece of garbage that isn't good for anything! I should have known... Buy the more expensive Triton or Astro headset or go with the Sony blue tooth set, I have no reason to believe that other Turtle Beach headsets would be any better.

Best video game related purchase ever
I never write reviews. In 12 years on Amazon, this is the second one I believe; but, I had to share my experience with these fantastic headphones. I'll be brief - don't worry about price; cost (rather than price) implies value atop price, and let me tell you the added value is well worth it. Besides the 5.1/7.1 ability (separating it from the lower tier model), is the fact that it is usable on X360, PC, and Mac, which is fantastic for me since I game on literally every modern platform. My PC gaming sessions, audio/video work on Mac, voice chat/calling, has been as great an experience as on my preferred gaming platform, PS3. I mention this because I've played with dozens of headsets over the years and nothing comes close. As far as making calls over Google Voice and Skype, the good news continues. The cords are quite long (at least 15 feet I'd say), which works well in my large living room. Set up was a breeze for me and will be for you. I mean, if you've connected a modern home theater set-up...come on, this is child's play. The over the ear design is extremely comfortable and I barely notice having them on after several hours of listening. I love the independent controls for chat vs. the game, important for team play during multiplayer matches and MMO's. The bass is quite prolific and easy to control. Other reviewers likely couldn't figure out that you just need to lower it on the main unit, so you can adjust accordingly on the other control unit that you keep close to you during matches. From a gameplay standpoint the channel separation is just fantastic and it really does help in picking up attacks vs. a non-surround set-up like my previous 3 channel soundbar. I had a 5.1 setup in my old house and I can tell you that now that I've gone DPX21, I would never go back to gaming with a traditional 5.1/7.1 external speaker setup. It's just needlessly disruptive for those around you and totally unnecessary. The experience with this headset trumps any setup I've experienced in my home or in any friends' homes. I don't know what it is, but I usually feel underwhelmed in some way by most setups - either by weak sound, inconsistently delivered volume on separate channels, or when they're properly powered and loud the reverberation in the wall or some other factor takes the cleanliness from the sound, not to mention it's usually bugging someone somewhere. I really can't say much else, other than to buy this gem of a product and you'll be happy (as will housemates).

I never have difficultly getting the sound I want out of them or hearing whatever it is I'd like to hear
Bought these for my PS3 back in the day... now they work perfectly with my PS4. I was thiiiiiiiis close to buying a pair of the Sony Wireless Gold headphones... as the amount of wires laying around are a little out of control... but the sound on the DPX21s are hard to beat. With the ability to control everything from bass to chat vol. and game vol. separately, I never have difficultly getting the sound I want out of them or hearing whatever it is I'd like to hear. I won't go into great details of sound quality.. but thanks to the surround sound, I can clearly hear directional noise and sound effects such as bullets whizzing by and footsteps sneaking up on me. And that bass... whoa. I have to leave it a little lower than halfway for most games as the low end rumble from either the in-game soundtrack or the ambient sound FX are too heavy and frequent and drown out everything else. This is a good thing btw.. it allows you to tweak the bass to a level you enjoy. The wires are both a good and bad thing. No interference... and since they are LONG (I can walk from my PS4 in the living room to the fridge in my kitchen and still have some slack) you can sit comfortably in your favorite chair/couch, wherever in the room it might be. The only reason I've knocked off a star is that the cushioned cups are not incredibly comfortable for long sessions. I can wear my bose comfortably for hours and they completely cover my ears. Even my Sony on-ear phones are softer to the touch. The DPX21 feel a little small to rest completely over my ears and require quite a bit of adjusting overtime to get them to rest nicely. Anyway, I bought these well over a year ago and they're still going strong.. still love them. When they break down, I'll probably see what Turtle Beach has cooked up in the surround sound, wireless family to replace them.

Will not last more than a year
I usually wait a while before I give reviews on things, and I'm glad I did in this case. DO NOT BUY THIS HEADSET. You might look at it and think, "Wow, a universal 7.1 surround sound Turtle Beach headset for this price? What a deal!" Don't be fooled like I was. I was using the headset on an Xbox One. The headset worked perfectly for the first couple months. The surround sound and chat was great, but occasionally the audio would glitch. I didn't think much of it at the time, but the glitches got worse and more frequent. Not to mention the headset was cheaply made and very fragile, but since I'm careful with all my expensive hardware that didn't turn out to be the problem. Anyway, the sound glitches got worse, and recently, the left speaker on the headphones died. I tried fixing it to no avail, so I decided to take apart the audio tuner (which I suspected was where the problem was). What I found inside really pissed me off. All the wires going through the tuner were cheaply tied together and I could tell where the stress point was because that was where the wires were severed; right where the cable comes out of the tuner. Now I take VERY good care of all my expensive things, and this still happened. The truth is that it's inevitable. This headset is a piece of cheaply put together junk that will not hold up over time. So just don't buy it. Do NOT buy this headset, because you WILL be as disappointed and pissed off as I was. My word of advice is that if you are shopping Turtle Beach, get one of their newer headsets that has better reviews. As for me, I'm going with the Stealth 420x FKR my next headset. Wireless. I don't think Turtle Beach makes bad headsets and I still have faith in their ability to produce quality products, but this is NOT one of them.

music to the ears
I bought the Turtle Beach dpx21 out of necessity as my trusty 10 year old 5.1 amp/receiver had broken down. They were ordered Thursday morning and arrived the next day (thankyou Amazon) Let me say that the 5.1 sound on these headphones is amazing. If it wasnt for the fact that I`m aware of the foam earpieces on my head (which are very comfy and light) I could swear that the sound I am hearing is coming from the corners of my living room where my amp speakers used to sit.The base is suitably meaty and the volume is nice and LOUD.When chatting to Xbox friends the chat boost automatically adjusts the chat volume which is great for when the game volume gets loud.If you`re looking for a quality set of 5.1 headphone I would heartily recommend these.I love them

sorprendenti

Great headphones for all my gaming needs
I had originally bought the DPX21 headset from a major retail store back in 2011. From day one, I was very pleased with it as I can use for all my gaming needs: PS3, XBox 360, and PC. You can connect the headset to either a digital or an analog ouput, which makes it very versatile. For XBox 360, I really like that the DPX21 comes with a cable to connect it to the control pad, to have voice chat. The sound is really good, and I appreciate the 7.1 simulation. On the downside, the headset does not seem very sturdy and resistant. My 4-year old son broke my original headset by simply trying to put them on his head. But, I liked the DPX21 so much that I bought another one from Amazon!
