I heard it can reduce swelling in other areas .... like ankles. Anyone had this experience?

Oh, wow! Sorry, but application to reduce swelling in other areas is not something we've ever tried. My mother had swelling in one ankle and lower leg and due to lack of cartilage in the knee joint and resulting excruciating pain, it was impossible to pull on traditional compression stockings. What we did to great result was to compression wrap the ankle and leg with special compression wraps. You might enquire about these and most importantly do not cross legs when sitting and keep the leg elevated anytime you do not have to stand. Get a good recliner chair and keep that particular leg elevated. The resulting diminishment in swelling will be a direct result of compression wrapping and elevating the leg. As a note of caution, do not try to use Ace bandage for wrapping because it is not stiff enough and will end up becoming (rolling up into) a tourniquet around the ankle and lower leg and just make the situation worse, cutting off blood and lymph flow. Do yourself a favor and invest in a good compression wrapping system. You will be glad.
