Culture Smart! Uzbekistan will take you beyond the standard descriptions of minarets, kebabs with vodka, embroidered skullcaps, and Soviet-style bureaucracy. It will make you aware of the value systems, attitudes, and behaviors of the different cultural groups in the country, and offer an insider’s view of Uzbekistan’s fascinating history, national traditions, various cuisines, and cultural scene. It will tell you what the peoples of Uzbekistan are like at home, at play, and in business, and give practical advice on how to behave in different situations so as to make the most out of your visit. Uzbekistan is a land of paradoxes, both enjoyable and surprising for foreign visitors. It is famous for its fabulous architectural monuments and the exotic spirit of the Great Silk Road, the ancient trade route connecting East and West. Uzbekistan is a multicultural society where old and revived traditions coexist with modernity. Review: A great resource - There was so much great information packed into this little book. Wait better than a travel guide, this book reached the culture and customs if Uzbekistan. Review: This book is more academic than most travel guides - The book is thorough and more like a sociology book than other "travel books". I would like to see a few more photos of some of the cultural aspects...like dances, clothing, art examples and architecture. I need to check with my Uzbek friends to see if they agree with most or some of it. I finally found the copyright date of 2017 in the back of the book. Things can change rapidly, especially among young people.

Great for travelers and expats alike
Uzbekistan is a highly complex, multi-layered society with a vast array of cultural norms ranging from the cosmopolitan to the traditional. Ulko provides an insider’s view valuable from everyone — tourists and expats alike. It is clear, well organized and provides a excellent jumping off point

Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by this book and I definitely give it 5 stars.
It is perfect for someone who wants a deeper and more meaningful experience visiting the country, or just an opportunity to learn more about Uzbekistan. I personally know the subject from having lived in the country and fully expected to have criticisms or remarks, but actually thought it was very well executed. The author managed to convey material aptly and profoundly, with tons of interesting details, all while keeping the content light and easy to understand. Highly recommended.

shallow survey
Written for business travelers without any useful information about historical sites. "How to get along while doing business" should be the title. Waste of money for the serious traveler.

This Is An Interesting Book.
This is an interesting book about the country of Uzbekistan. Some of the interesting information that the author of this book mentions includes the following information: The favorite food of many of the people in Uzbekistan is plov which is made of rice, mutton, thinly sliced carrots, and onions. It is usually cooked over an open fire. Soviet-style cafeterias, often referred to as bistros, are commonly found near large offices, factories, and universities. For about 70% of the population of the country, Uzbek is the mother tongue, and a further 10% to 15% speak it to a certain degree. The percentage of people in Uzbekistan that know how to speak the English language are a little more than 5%. In rural areas, the family house is based on the concept of a courtyard more or less isolated from the outside world by a blind wall. It is made of adobe, baked brick, or concrete.

Essential Reading for Anyone Visiting Uzbekistan
As my wife and I will be visiting Uzbekistan later this year I bought this book to learn about the culture and customs of its people. Most 'travel guides' advise you where to go, what to see, where to eat and where to stay. This guides completes the picture. It is a fascinating read with much valuable information and essential for anyone visiting the country.

Very good, but needs updating on mechanics of visiting/travelling
Culturally VERY useful, but bit out of date now - things have moved on in Uzbekistan since 2017. No visa necessary for visitors from many countries; ATMs everywhere in the cities; US dollars and Uz. som easily interchanged at a standard rate; internet access and phone signal widely available; English spoken by younger people; but you still need to be able to read the Cyrillic script. Tourists in the big towns a common sight.

useful, insightful
Written by a western educated Uzbekistani this highlights many of the areas where cultural misunderstanding could happen Best book I've found and invaluable to anyone thinking of traveling along the Central Asian section of the Silk Road
