Get what you need from your boss In this follow-up to the bestselling It's Okay to Be the Boss , Bruce Tulgan argues that as managers demand more and more from their employees, they are also providing them with less guidance than ever before. Since the number one factor in employee success is the relationship between employees and their immediate managers, employees need to take greater responsibility for getting the most out of that relationship. Drawing on years of experience training managers and employees, Tulgan reveals the four essential things employees should get from their bosses to guarantee success at work. Shows employees how to ask for what they need to succeed in their high-pressure jobs Shatters previously held beliefs about how employees should manage up Outlines what employees must get from their managers: clear expectations; the skills needed to perform their jobs; honest feedback, recognition or rewards A novel approach to managing up, It's Okay to Manage Your Boss is an invaluable resource for employees who want to work more effectively with their managers. Read if you are new to the workplace, or clueless.
There's nothing really wrong with this book, but if you have good work habits, common sense and self-awareness, you won't find much that you don't already know. In a nutshell: manage yourself well and insist that you are given clear instruction and management from those to whom you report. Save your money.

Specific ideas
This about whatโs in your sphere of influence- what you can really control- and what you canโt. Very thought-provoking and specific.

Ensure you understand what your boss requires of you...
is the nub of this book and have regular weekly meetings with your boss to ensure you're still on track in meeting those requirements. Get 5 minutes with your boss even if it's with them when they're en route to somewhere else. There's no point you spending lots of effort working on the wrong thing, hence the regular touching base. I found that an entire book to tell you this was a little excessive.

Good in it's class but not enjoyable
The book is good as far as its purpose is concerned but is not engaging enough which can keep you going.
