These are his favorite hiking shoes now. Dry quickly between uses, (some shoes you have to rotate, but not these), comfortable, he's always raving how he loves them. No more foot pain.

UPDATE: After a backpacking trip in these, I deem my first impression a fluke. Despite walking on trails-turned-streams and plenty of sloshy snow, my feet were reasonably dry, sweaty but dry. The cold sensation that I reported is because the water-proof membrane is the inner layer in contact with the sock, and you can feel the outside of the shoe being wet.I have also the low, non weather-proof version of these boots and I put hundreds of miles in them, with a pack. These are no different as far as comfort, with the addition of ankle protection (from bumps, not sprains). The problem with these is that if you just walk through wet grass, you'll feel the cold of the water seeping through. I suspect it's the lacing rather than the fabric, but the result is the same, wet feet. To add insult to injury, they dry up slower than the summer version and are more sweaty (understandable because of the added membrane). Still an Altra believer, but for fall boots I'll have to look elsewhere.

I love, love, love them for my chillier hikes. I don't use them in snowshoes without adding some insulators that I have. Likewise not quite warm enough for a snow hike... unless a warm Spring day.
