Q: Thicker than normal. Won’t fit in my slotted tool...is there something else I should be using?

I too found this paper to be thicker than the ones I have used before, although it did fit in one of my slotted tools. You can use the needle tool (no slot) instead, but the technique takes some practice. This paper is stiff, which means that it does not uncoil as easily, but it does produce a more sturdy finished product. All quilling papers are not created equal, so you may have to just keep trying different sources until you find one that works well for you. Although this one makes sturdy ornaments, I don't think I would order it again.
