I second the review written above by Roger, and this book deserves many more excellent reviews. It is wonderful reading and I often refer to the story about Newton's oblate spheroid and how this relatively simple problem led to a great unfolding of magic and mystery in one sense - for, as the world became better understood scientifically, it rejected much in the way of previous mythology and fantasy which also has a role to play in the human imaginarium, but on the other hand, so many stranger than fiction truths became revealed through the advances of exploration that it is difficult even for this post-colonialist theorist to reject the second great age of exploration completely. It is a remarkable reading experience and mind-expanding in so many ways.
