Heart & Soul of Tal Farlow

technical problems, great music though
A high pitched squeal intermittently on the first disc. Some serious problems with tape transfer.I also had problems with the Barney Kessel collection which was plagued with skips and wouldn't play except on my computerAudiophiles are duly warned away. Those on a budget will be attracted to the stunning collection of outrageously good music on these Avid recordings.I will give them one more chance. Scarcely better than Real Gone Jazz. But oh, the Music...!

i love tal farlow,
i just LOVE tal. he changed my musical life.he's not for everybody, but once you dig him, i mean once i heard him playing something i knew well as a player, i could get through the fubs and mistakes because i "knew" what he meant.ive got him up there with barry galbreath, johnny smith, george barnes, christopher parkening, and the rest. i love many others to numerous to mention, but tal is my "go to"guy. the mosaic collection is great. i got the johnny smith collection from them, which i picked up at their office in connecticut and asked if they had anything by tal, they did not, but 2 years later, they did the savoy stuff, i don't know... maybe...

Great Compilation of Hard to Find Tal Farlow Albums
Even though I already own all of these albums included here in some form, I was very excited to see this two disc collection available to buy while in a record store the other day. Included are the albums "The Tal Farlow Album", "The Interpretations of Tal Farlow", "A Recital by Tal Farlow", and "TAL". All of these are very hard to find and if you are lucky enough to come across them, they are very expensive. This is a great deal for this music. It is essentially priced as a double-disc cd....which it is...BUT, besides the fact that there are four albums, any one of these cd's would run you over the price of this entire collection. These also contain some of Tal's very best playing. The music in this collection as well as "The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow" and all of the music he played with the Red Norvo Trio in the early fifties are essential listening for any music lover. I would also like to point out that two of the albums on here 'A Recital...' and 'Interpretations' are also the two albums that make up the majority of the album "Guitar Genius : The LA Sessions". If you have the money to buy this, then go for it. It's well worth it. Some of the most beautiful music for $20

Best bebop guitar by the guy who virtually invented it
This is an unbelievable bargain for what is to my mind the best jazz guitar playing of all time. Ok... there's Wes and Jim and Sal and Herb and so on... but this guy is so incredibly musical that surely his appeal should be wider than only jazz guitar aficionados. Tal's playing is pure and lyrical and seemingly endlessly inventive - maybe it's not flashy enough for a wider audience or maybe his occasional forays into signwriting - presumably a steadier source of income - made him too elusive to be 'marketed' like other jazz men.It is my feeling that as more and more young guitarists become interested in jazz he will be 'discovered' and valued for the national treasure that he surely is.I think if I were allowed just one recording to take to a desert island this would be it. Nuff said.

Terrific Tal
A wonderful double CD issue from the Avid label who are currently producing some superb albums at bargain prices. The issue captures 4 recordings Farlow made for Verve with groups ranging from trio to sextet format.Almost every track is an absolute gem but my personal favourites are the West Coast sessions of May 1955 featuring Bob Envoldsen, Bill Perkins and Bob Gordon. The sound quality is first class and there are full recording details within the liner notes. Highly recommended.

Tal Farlow
Tal Farlow was one of the greatest jazz guitarists but little known because he continued to work as a sign writer and often left the live music scene for long periods. These albums are for guitar afficionados who wish to hear him in group support format and also leading his own combos. He was much in demand by other better known musicians from the fifties onwards because of his wide ranging repertoire of popular songs and jazz standards, melodic capability and command of the instrument at many tempos.

A great review of a musical career.
I was delighted to come to the realization I'd bough a double CD album, as I simply wasn't paying attention beyond wanting a Farlow CD to play on my hospital radio jazz show. As it turned out, the two cd's cover a large part of the career of this very talented guitarist, and all of it in fine acoustic quality..very good deal, in my estimation...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WORDS SIMPLY CANNOT DO JUSTICE TO THIS MOST SUPERB JAZZ MUSICIAN WHO ALONG WITH JIMMY RANEY VIRTUALLY INVENTED THE BEBOP STYLE OF GUITAR PLAYING. TAL IS A MUSICIAN OF THE FIRST ORDER BY ANY STANDARDS. NUFF SAID. JUST BUY IT - THEY'RE VIRTUALLY GIVING IT AWAY - YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Truly Essential Listening
Tal Farlow is one of the greatest Jazz guitarist's of all time. His versions of 'Anything Goes' and 'Isn't it Romantic' on this collection of albums are truly incredible. As a guitarist I recommend this album to any jazz guitar fans.
