Modern Toy Train Repair & Maintenance

There aren't many books covering basic toy train repair and maintenance. This book by R.D. Teal does a nice job in covering some of the basics. It is not the definitive book on repair and maintenance however it is a nice book to have as part of your collection of reference materials.Here is the low down on the book:1) The book is 112, half size, pages in paperback format.2) The book was written in 2005 by Richard Teal who started doing train repair before his retirement.3) The material covers Lionel, MTH and K-Line brands of trains.4) An overview of the supplies needed for repair is provided.5) The material touches on Creating a Workstation, Finding Parts and Service Information, General Repair and Maintenance as well as the brand specific repairs of the brands listed in point 3 of my list.6) A Basic Glossary and nice Index is provided.7) The material is easy to read, with some step by step guidance and color pictures used to highlight major topic areas.8) The material covering Digital Sound and Control is a little dated.9) The book leaves you wanting more.10) The Author provides some valuable tips (Example - Check X and Y before you actually consider replacing part Z).Since there is not a definitive repair manual for all brands the buyer will need to consider collecting knowledge from various sources. I believe that this book is one of those sources to keep on hand.Other reference material (which I have reviewed) that you may wish to consider are as follows: Maintenance & Repair Guide for Lionel Electric Trains & Accessories Greenberg's Repair and Operating Manual for Lionel Trains, 1945-1969 (Greenberg's Repair and Operating Manuals)

Very informative

Content excellent and extremely valuable. The title has a lot to be desired "Modern Toy Train" in my opinion is inappropriate. Most modelers do not consider there trains as toys, but scaled down versions of the real thing. The basic repair & maintenance requirements of these model trains is mostly the same regardless of the scale of the locomotives. This book basically covered O scale and some tin plate. Tin plate is considered by some to be toy trains but O scale is a scaled down model of the real thing. I would have made the title REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF MODERN O SCALE/TIN PLATE MODEL TRAINS . Just my opinion for what it is worth.

Instruction manual is for various model train manufacturers. I wish there were more instructions for Lionel trains, which are probably the largest maker of model trains.

I CAN NOT recommend this book for model train repair. It's a book for LIONEL train repair. ONLY. If you run any other scale or any other brand, this AC powered repair book is worthless for you. Every other brand is DC powered. NO WHERE in the description does it say it's for ONE BRAND in a different power distribution than literally the rest of the model train hobby world. Amazon needs to update it's product review. Seriously.

He is into model trains and has been since he was a kid. He likes to get books like this for ideas to use with his set.

I have a number of old trains that I want to spruce up and bring back into use, so wanted a detailed book to help me. This is a comprehensive and detailed book, however it is by an American author and deals exclusively in American model trains. I must admit I did not realise that they were so different but then I am a relative newcomer to the world of model trains. I wanted to post this review just as an advisory that this book has lots of helpful pictures, seems well written but is clearly for the American market.Having returned it, I ordered  Fine Tuning and Maintaining 00 Gauge Models  which is also an excellent book with clear descriptions, extremely detailed photographs and is perfect for what I wanted.
